I love this place! Me and my friend go here at least once a week. They have great rolls always at 50% off then of course special rolls. They also have these awesome sushi boats that feed like 7 people and it comes on an actual boat! If you buy Sake the chefs will gladly take shots with you if you offer. Ken, Eric, Shawn and Andy are the best sushi chefs ever! Very friendly. If you befriend Eric he will surprise you with custom creations and cute dessert animals made from oranges on the house. The roll I get EVERYTIME I go is the Rosecrans, it is DELISH!

Good sushi, good prices, great for the family! I would say the other reviews hold true. We'd go back.

After driving around looking for some place to eat, we just saw a sushi sign and said, "Hey let's eat there!" This place is a cool little spot, nice decor, not too fancy, but clean. Sushi is good, I loved the volcano we had... declicious! Also their rolls are half off!

Tsuruya Sushi is my choice Japanese location when I'm on my lunch break. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Their sushi is high quality and decently priced, but don't be mislead by the 50% discount. It has been their since the grand opening. After the discount, you a basically paying slightly below average to average for your rolls. Birthdays are a blast here as well, get ready for a suprise if you go here to celebrate it!

Have gone here for lunch and service is pretty bad. I did like the food, they have decent lunch specials but I do not want to go back because of the service. They take extremely long to get the food out, and last time I was there our waitress completely forgot about us. She took long just to take our order and we hardly saw her the entire time (no refills on water or to check up on us). We went with another group and they were already getting their food and we hadn't even ordered yet. (We had different waitresses) It took long to get our check and after I gave it to them, we waited and waited and waited... Finally, we called her over to ask for my card and she went to go get it, but she hadn't run it yet! Very annoying. When we were leaving we told the manager that we were not happy with the service and she just said "Oh, really? Ok." She didn't even care and wasn't listening. Convenient as its close to where I work but I may not go back because I did not like the service. If you have a lot of time to sit around and wait, then you may have a better experience than I did.

Seriously great sushi at seriously great prices. I've prepared and dined on sushi from coast to coast thus I am far more knowledgeable on the subject than anyone below me; trust me this where you want to be. Best fucking veggie roll I've had in 28 years. Makes other puny veggie rolls taste like sushi purchased at Trader Joe's. I've never even considered a vegetable roll until now.... I'm a man I eat meat and fish. Twice the sushi for half the price of everyone else in the area... and doesn't smell like seaworld when you first walk in! Great staff great chef's and always pumping ESPN on the flatscreen's behind the bar. Highly recommended by me, and I have literally bathed in soy and wasabi in my lifetime. Domo.

This is our favorite sushi place! All the sushi chefs and staff are so nice! It's rare these days to go into a restaurant and get GREAT service! My husband and I came with our parents recently after we had our wedding (papers only) and when the staff found out, they made us a Sushi Cake! It was so unbelievable and surprising! Who has a sushi cake?! It was great! The rolls never take long to make and they always offer great choices if you ask for "whatever the sushi chef thinks is best". We love the lemon roll, the alaska roll, and the rainbow roll. They are clean, fresh, not-too-fussy rolls with great flavor. Their sashimi salad is also great!
(5)Karena R.
I absolutely love this place. This is my all time favorite Sushi spot and this far the best I've had.
(5)J B.
Pretty cheap, very consistent (I've probably had it 10 times now)... I'd give the place a 5/10 on the creativity scale but they do every piece of theirs very well (salmon roll aside) so I keep going back. (The salmon roll uses ground salmon instead of actual pieces and it makes the roll, in my opinion, inedible.) 50% off most simple rolls (40% off of takeout) but prices are somewhat inflated so it's not THAT cheap. Just sort of cheap. Not a great date place, probably a better spot to go and hang out with friends. Service is definitely inconsistent but has never swung my experience one way or another so I'd say it's a non-issue.

Solid, fresh sushi at reasonable prices. Yay! I'm definitely a fan! Tsuruya is one of those places that offers a "50% OFF ALL SUSHI" perma-special. The listed prices in the menu are a little high, but what you wind up paying is fair. We went early and made sure we sat with Ken at the bar. Holy cow, he's hysterically funny and super nice. He also knows his fish. I ordered salmon sashimi, and he gave me a beautiful plate of silky salmon belly. Yum. He also mentioned that the bluefin tuna was super-fresh, so we tried that, too. It was ruby-red and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The rolls are great. I like my sushi unadulterated: fish, a little rice, a little nori. I'm not a huge fan of the Paris Hilton-style sushi stuffed with fried shrimp and fake crab and slathered with spicy mayo and a pile of "tempura crunchies". I was quite pleased with Tsuruya's list of simple rolls. My favorite roll was the Konami roll: spicy tuna with cucumber and radish sprout, topped with salmon and avocado. Yum. This is definitely my current favorite cheap sushi spot.
(4)Christa D.
Overall, a great experience. We came here after realizing that another sushi restaurant in the area was closed on Mondays. We ordered multiple generic rolls, most on the 50% off menu: Rosecrans California Philadelphia Spicy Tuna Shrimp Crunch Shrimp Tempura All of the rolls were great. We also indulged in the buy 2 beers, get 1 free sake; great deal. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Be prepared to wait a little longer than average at this restaurant. The restaurant and restrooms are clean, which is always a good sign for the cleanliness of the kitchen. Can't wait to come back!

I went here for lunch one day and was quite surprised. While I wouldn't put it on the top of my list of places to go back to at this point in time, it definitely merits a follow up in the future. Pros: -Service, music, and ambiance is great -Fish is fresh and food is tasty -Chefs know their stuff -Rolls are almost always half off -They are also extremely generous with sushi toppings. Many places skimp on the tempura, sauces, wasabi, etc, but not this place Cons: -While rolls are almost always half off, the normal prices are twice what similar competitors would charge, turning their discounts into normal priced rolls. -I was a bit disappointed by their sushi roll variety. Virtually all of the rolls either had cream cheese or were California roll based. I'd like to see some more rolls that aren't built off of a California roll. Do this and I'll come back!
(4)Stephanie P.
Delicious food, friendly service, decent prices. Definitely will go back!
(4)Denise G.
The sushi is really good and I have always had reasonably good service. The only bummer is terrible parking and its always FREEZING COLD in there, so bring a sweater.
(4)Farah M.
In from out of town and even the the good tasted good, the rolls all fell apart and was not presentable. Also they will not split a check for more than 3 people. Who does that?
(2)J P.
All I can say is that this place was very good. To come here on a whim, I'm glad it happened. Very tasty food and prepared well. Price was on point for what we had. We will be definitely coming back for many one visits...
(5)Josefina T.
I really like this sushi restaurant. I think it's located in a block of Rosecrans that's easy to oversee and difficult to access. However, past the somewhat unappealing exterior and random neighboring businesses you are pleasantly greeted with a well-appointed room with lots of windows and a clean/stylish ambiance. You will find that most of their rolls are really nice, and their fish to rice ratio is not too bad. I am always unsatisfied with sushi bars that use too much rice in their rolls to cover their meager portions of fish. The waitresses are always friendly and prompt, and overall for the price this place is of great value.
(5)elisa v.
Love this place. Great sushi, good atmosphere , friendly staff, this is our go to sushi restaurant!!
(5)Iggy I.
My husband and I were in San Diego for a day visiting. I was craving for sushi after a long tiring day at the zoo. We found this place and couldn't be more glad! Sushi was fresh, reasonably priced and portions were generous. We ordered white fish sushi, and the server came to us and recommended we get the halibut instead. She said their white fish is not very fresh and she's against serving it to us even if they have it. We were very impressed at the quality this restaurant has! They truly cared about their customers. We also ordered the spider roll which was one of their regular rolls that's 50% off. When it came back, it was the best "regular" roll we've ever had! The portions were generous (big roll) plus it really had a good serving of the fish/crab. It was not one of those rolls where they stuff it with rice. This was really good. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for some fresh, good sushi in San Diego but want to avoid the craziness in Old Town and Gas Lamp. It was like 3-5 minutes from Old Town too so it's not like it was too far out.
(5)Jennie P.
DELICIOUS! Best sushi I've ever had! The prices are a bit pricey but it's worth it! I have never had a bomb California roll like I've had here! The staff is really friendly & they always check up on you. Great customer service. They have green tea ice cream & omg! Delicious! I love this place! It's also really nice inside.
(5)Tina N.
6PM on a Saturday night. Great selection of rolls at VERY affordable prices; they had quite a selection of 50% off rolls. The proportions of the rolls were ideal and the fish was extremely fresh. Thoroughly enjoyed the 3 rolls I got. Docked 1 star for them apparently being understaffed that night. We waited 30mins for our food. Despite that, our server was working hard so no complaints here. Would come back if I'm in the area and craving sushi.
(3)Alison W.
Fantastic. Kid friendly. Clean. Very clean. Very good food. Got the Las Vegas roll and California roll and geisha roll. All super excellent. Kids got chicken teriyaki kids meals. Very good portions even for a 12 year old. Cant wait to come back!
(5)Candy H.
Nice little place. Sushi was fantastic and the wait staff were nice. They came back often to see if we needed anything.... After we ate we just sat and talked and had a few beers and saki.... Didn't see staff for a loooong time.... Maybe they just thought we needed space? The food from the menu was ok, nothing to get excited about, I had the chicken ginger taki w miso, salad and rice. Miso was hot :) but lacked much flavor... Same went fior salad dressing. When I come back, it will just be the sushi :) yummy!
(4)Ariel T.
Some Sushi places are totally devoid of a Japanese feel. This one kept some of the spirit and serves nice portions with attention to detail you would expect in a higher end spots. This is a sushi gem hidden in a strip mall. Do not judge the book by its cover: I've seen same quality selling for more elsewhere.
(5)sierra v.
Unassuming strip mall exterior left us nervous about trying it but relented only because of the kids' harassment. Boy were we surprised! From the moment we walked in the place outshone it's facade and continued to surprise and delight us as we ate our meals. Best age dashi, best shortribs!!
(5)Peter T.
Have you ever been out to an 8:30 dinner and then wondered, "Is the real staff tied up in the walk in freezer?" Me neither, well... not until dining at Tsuruya. We rolled in here, because Kiyimi is now inexplicably closed on Tuesdays, hoping that we'd catch a good meal. I picked up the pencil and immediately it was covered in some sauce, but not soy sauce because there was no soy sauce on the table. "Hey some people are sloppy eaters," I thought, "this is not a sign of things to come." Wrong! A few items mention "4 kinds of fish" but not which kind. When I ask, the older waitress (the one who every yelper says sucks) she says in a very sucky way, "the chef choose, you no choose." "O.K., but what does the chef choose?" This goes on for a while until she mentions, "white fish." Now whatever fish they call white fish is not a fish I want, so I ask if they can omit the whitefish, "that is custom roll, no 50% off" After explaining that I don't want any other fish in its place, she makes sure I know that it will have not just less types of fish, but less fish. Whatever. So we get our order, guess what, no soy on the table. When I asked for soy, they acted like I was crazy, then after repeating 'no soy' to each other enough times to be an Abbott and Costello skit, they finally bring us a nearly empty bottle. I am not making this up, not five minutes later another waitress comes by to collect our soy. "Well actually, we'd like some more," so they take our bottle, then ask the table next to us for their bottle, then give us their bottle. The other table is confused now, and we hear them wondering aloud why they took their soy and gave it to us, we wonder this as well as now we are all super uncomfortable. Ten minutes after that, they ask for our soy again. "No, can you just wait until we finish eating, you can have the soy then!" She seemed shocked that we would want to use the soy on the sushi! Five minutes later, "We are closing the register, can you pay now?" Seriously, we just ordered a lot of sushi, can you not just let us enjoy it? Sometime before I can reach in my pocket for my wallet, my companion finds a bone in her roll, "Excuse me, we found a bone in our sushi!" "Bone?" "Yes, BONE!" "Which roll you find that bone?" After much debate, they take the check, and my cash, and then they come back to collect the bone. The older waitress holds out a napkin into which I deposit the bone of shame with my chopsticks. She shuffle runs it over to the chefs and they have a mini-huddle in hushed tones. Only after they have rung up my bill and made my change, does the chef make his way over to apologize. He was actually very nice, said he would take care of us the next time we dined there... which up until that point was an impossibility. O.K. So we skip that roll and continue eating. "Excuse me, can we have soy sauce?" I can't hold it in anymore, "Can you seriously just let me finish eating, I swear I will bring you the soy!" "What?" She squats down and leans in to make sure she heard me right. I repeat myself. "O.K." Clearly it is not O.K. What the hell does your soy have planned this evening that you are so eager to get it ready for?! Then the chef comes back over to explain that they all want to go home... as he is talking, the waitresses pick our plates up... they still have sushi on them!!! I reach out and grab a piece as they are walking it off. He explains that they have to go home because they worked all day. I tell him that they should close earlier. He laughs as the next waitress grabs my water. I grab it out of her hand so I had something to wash down the piece that I was holding in my bare hands. The food would have been O.K. if I hadn't had to eat it faster than Dominos delivers pizzas. Oh well. We leave. I look at my watch 9:40, I look at the door Closing time 9:30. Oh, now I get it, you leave at 9:30, then in the morning the day crew finds the night crew tied up in the walk in freezer. FAIL.
(2)Camila V.
Clean, delicious and perfect prices! It's so hard to find a sushi place that's all three and Tsuruya nails it! Saki and beer special is perfect for date night and every roll and fish we've tried has been amazing!
(5)Chauncey L.
I have always had a great experience here. The service is good, but the sushi is always delicious and tastes very fresh. This is probably my 11th time here and I have never had problems.
(4)Kelley H.
The rolls are delicious! This is our go-to spot for sushi. The service is great and fast. You will not be disappointed.
(5)Patrick M.
This is the most tasteless sushi I have ever had, I came here around 3pm with my girlfriend, I order a rising sun roll pretty much california roll with salmon on top for 9.50 and some salmon nigiri and tuna, she order a philadephia roll. When the food came it was all combine in a big white plate, the nigri taste ok, but not very fresh, so I try the rising sun roll. It has no flavor or any taste to it, and the service was pretty bad as well. the waitress never ask how we are doing and we never saw her again until I have to go ask for the check and some hot water, because my girlfriend was coughing a lot, no one even come by to check up and offer some water or if everything's ok. the staff and food are pretty bad, the price is decent, but i would not be coming back here.
(1)Len P.
Tsuruya is one of my favorite local sushi spots. I have tried most things on the menu and never been disappointed! I normally get a few orders of sushi and still get out the door for under $20. Of course there are plenty of premium items , and even grill options if your looking for that (also delicious!) I eat here frequently, and always recommend it!
(5)Jen B.
New favorite sushi restaurant. This place has some of the best sushi in the area for the price. You can get a California Roll for about $3 and they have special rolls that look amazing, taste delicious, a large portion and are very fairly priced. I've been there on a Saturday afternoon, Sunday evening and a few weeknights and it's been consistent every time. The inside is very nicely decorated and clean. It hasn't been extremely busy each time, so I've never had to wait to be seated. Sometimes I feel like people in San Diego like to hype up certain restaurants so much that everyone, in an effort to reduce their cognitive dissonance, decides that it really is the best thing they've ever eaten and continues to blindly frequent said establishments. I've been to many sushi restaurants here with lines out the door and, once I finally got in and ate my food, I left wondering why. I went into Tsuruya without any expectations and left with a belly full of sushi and satisfaction.
(5)Jeb H.
I was looking for a new sushi place since most of the spots in my hometown of Ocean Beach are just not worthy. My friend and I decided to give Tsuruya Sushi a try, and boy were we pleasantly surprised! Don't let the "50% off most rolls all the time" thing fool you, the sushi here is really tasty! We really like their signature rolls, and the "Ocean Roll" is now a must-have every time we visit! Other good rolls include the "Geisha" and the "Hawaiian." In addition, the garlic edamame and sashimi are also excellent. They also give you free sake with each beer during happy hour! The average price for garlic edamame, 3 rolls and 2 beers is $40, which makes my wallet very happy. Make sure to stress any appetizers that you want before the rolls, because the servers sometimes forget. My only complaint is the odd location and small parking lot.
(4)Viri G.
One if my favorite sushi restaurants. I love the sushi rolls but also love the teriyaki chicken
(5)Tristin E.
This is the first sushi joint I've been to where I felt so much like the family we bought the sushi chefs beers !!
(5)Maryella P.
I was here on NYE and I totally get that it was slightly busy...and honestly, I might have not even noticed how long it took to get our 2 rolls, except that we got our bill before we got our food! That is not okay! Like, ever... The place itself is in a weird location but inside it was nice, kind of dark and sexy, actually a place I would go back to. The rolls were good and they were 50% off at the time. I'm not ruling this place out just yet, I guess I'll give it another shot soon.
(2)Rainier B.
Been going here often, over a year now. There are two things that I look for when trying a new sushi restaurant: Chicken katsu curry and ankimo. This place serves both! If you don't care for either, try their sushi or bento boxes. Their sushi is fresh, and the fish to rice ratio is very generous. As for their fried food, they are perfectly cooked, delicious and not oily. For the quality and price, it's very difficult to beat.
(5)Veronica E.
"50% OFF" is always the eye catcher, but dont worry most of their sushi menu is ALWAYS 50% off. haha The first time i came was with my cousin who went to USD a while back, so after church at the Rock with a couple friends wanted sushi and i suggested we eat here. FOOD: All the sushi items were great! We shared about 3 or 4 rolls and they were all yummy. They have hand rolls as well if you dont want the standard 8 piece roll. I've never tried the bento boxes so cant attest to that. Lots to choose from on the menu as well. Kirin, Saporo, and some other Asian beers along with domestic were available to enjoy with your meal. PRICE: stick with the "50% OFF" or specials rolls of the day which are reasonable for the quality, especially because sushi can get pretty expensive. The bento boxes are pretty pricey. Drink prices were standard. AMBIANCE: clean and pretty huge! they have TVs so it was great to watch some basketball during dinner. SERVICE: not so attentive but they get the job done... nicely. :)
(4)Priyam D.
This is me and my boyfriend's spot! We absolutely love it here. The staff is really friendly and the chefs are always fun to talk to. My favorite rolls here at the caterpillar and the spider. I've been to a bunch of sushi spots and none of them are as good as this place.
(5)Kimberly B.
Came here before heading to the Sports Arena for a Lakers preseason game and it did not disappoint. This place has something for sushi lovers and seafood haters. My friend ordered the chicken yakisoba and she said it was really good. I ordered the shrimp crunch roll and spider roll off the 50% off menu and my sushi craving was satisfied. Sushi was tasty. Servers were very nice but a bit slow and it was hard to get their attention at times. We were there a little longer than we expected but since it's 3 minutes from the sports arena, it wasn't too bad. In conclusion, if you're hungry for sushi and NOT in a rush, come here.
(3)Anna C.
Sushi rolls were mushy -- no bueno. Yakisoba was sickeningly sweet. They have a pretty good deal with their 50% off rolls (which are orginally priced ~$7-15 each), but the quality is quite lacking. If you like PB Sushi, then you might like this place because their rolls are about the same quality. The decor is pretty nice. Parking lot is small and most cars are NOT parked within the lines (reminds me of Bay Area parking... =\ ) Eh, never again.
(2)Samantha H.
OMG delicious
(5)Christine C.
I really really love this place! Really can't go wrong with half off regular and special rolls!! Their sushi is well done and delicious!
(5)Dan E.
I was disappointed overall. The decor, the atmosphere and even the service were nice, but the food just wasn't there, not even for the reasonable price. The rice in the sushi was a bit too sticky and the fish in all of our rolls (we got 4 different ones, 5 total) all seemed old; just not fresh. What really clued me in was the texture and the colors of the seafood - the textures were quite mushy and even mealy and the colors looked like they had been out for a while. I just did not like it enough to say I'd go back.
(2)Shy A.
Love Love Tsuruya! I've been bringing everyone to Tsuruya for the past few weeks...lunch meetings, dinner dates....come one come all! The sushi cuts are fresh and you get an abundance of options for rolls and bento boxes. The service has been friendly each visit and haven't gotten one thing I didn't like. My go to dish? A Salmon Bento Box...add a few rolls and you're golden. All their rolls are 50% off all the time---it can catch you off guard....Is this some scheme to get you in? Yes. But, that doesn't mean that the quality of the food is any less. Besides, I'll gladly pay 50% less for something as tasty as anything Tsuruya serves up!
(4)Gabby R.
This place is so good!! Their regular rolls are 50% off, so you end up paying a reasonable amount for their rolls. I got the shrimp tempura which was around $6 and a salmon and spicy tuna roll for around 7. Their big bottles of sake are only 7!! Try the peach flavored cold sake. For 6 people with 2-3 rolls per person plus beer and sake the bill was around 130 with tip already included. You won't regret eating here. Must try!!
(4)Angela R.
The BEST sushi in San Diego. Tsuruya Sushi is such a hidden treasure. Every roll is divine -- crunchy, rainbow, eel, and avocado rolls -- I could go on. I've never had a bad experience here and recommend it to anyone who's in the mood for exquisite raw fish. And the best part of it all? It's super affordable. You can't beat the amazing food and price here -- do yourself a favor and go!
(5)Chris W.
This is our go-to spot. Can beat the prices and quality anywhere in San Diego. Favorite rolls: Crunchy Spicy Tuna, Crazy, Hawaiian.
(5)Paola N.
The sashimi here was unbelievable. So fresh! Havent had super fresh raw fish in a while!! I had their salmon and white tuna sashimi and was in love. I also tried the Philly, which is my fave simple roll, and it was equally yummy. Will be coming back for a second round of sashimi for sure and to try a new roll.
(5)Malia P.
I ordered spicy tuna and shrimp tempura rolls Shrimp tempura was fine. It's the spicy tuna I have issues with. Don't mess with something good. I'm a regular here. I would say I come here at least once a month. I ordered for pick up. When I opened the container the spicy tuna was bright pink. My friend's phone camera wasn't good enough to capture the true color. I called to ask them if their recipe changed. The color and taste is different from what I normally get there. The host said that no other customers have complained about it. I told her I read a review on yelp from another customer who also didn't like the spicy tuna. She passed the phone onto the chef. The chef said that they started to add tomato flour this week. The fish was tangier probably from the tomatoes? It wasn't spicy either. He offered me credit and told me next time I order spicy tuna, make sure to say "no tomato flour". For you yelpers next time, learn from my mistake.
(2)Cameron M.
I love this place, it doesn't look like much on the outside but it is fantastic. The food is all fresh and delicious and it comes at a really good price. The staff is always very friendly and in all the times I have been there (probably at least 25 times) I don't think I once had a bad experience. Rolls I recommend (spelling might be off): 1. Konami roll 2. Wow wow roll 3. geisha roll 4. special spicy roll (tuna w red sauce and jalapenos) 5. the heart attack (is bomb but the name doesn't lie, it is heavy)
(5)Takeru T.
I stopped by here for lunch recently on the basis that I was hungry and it was there. There's not much that can be said overall which hasn't already been reviewed, but here are some minor things that stood out to me: 1. The inside of the restaurant is fairly modern and plays contemporary top 20's hits from the radio. It's well-lit, air conditioned, and looks a lot like the inside of Taka Sushi in the downtown Gaslamp district--which is to say not very authentic, more of a fusion sports bar feel. There's a pretty good amount of seating. 2. The sushi was priced pretty much the same as every other sushi place around here. Not sure what people are talking about when they say it's cheap. Even with the 50% off deals on hand-rolls, you'll spend about as much as at any other place. 3. The staff were 100% Korean (at least on the day I was there). Not that it matters, just an observation. They were fairly friendly. 4. There are hobos camped out in the parking lot. Not too aggressive, but definitely noticeable. One of them was betting passing cars that they couldn't hit him with a quarter. I hit him, but it was a nickel so I didn't get any points. They were fairly friendly. Overall, my experience was about average. Definitely not bad, but nothing special either.
(3)Cindy L.
I cant tell you how good or bad the food is because I went in ON A WEEK DAY...and waited for about 10 mins for anyone to even acknowledge waiting for service. After 10 mins waiting someone quickly rushed by and said they would be back to help me. So I waited some more....but no one came back to help me. Are you effing serious!!! Either get more help or get better staff. Cause that place sucked!
(1)Danielle T.
Once again...KEN IS THE BOMB.COM!!! It had been awhile since we had been here and the minute we walked in our favorite sushi chef, Ken, greeted us like it was just yesterday!! Sushi, saki and beer, much needed after a long week! 2 Sapporos and FREE saki, yes FREE!! Asked Ken to make us something SPECIAL and SPICY! Let me tell ya, he did just that!! Every bite was delicious with a mixture of carrot, jalapeno, tuna, yellow tail and green onions on top and crab and more deliciousness inside! I enjoy eating at a sushi place when you tell the chef to make me something special and they NAIL IT! As we were watiing for our check, Ken prepared a special plate of halibut fin in delicious sauce - TO DIE FOR!! The fish itself had great flavor!! It really does pay to get to know your sushi chef - Ken's a great guy, and I look forward to coming back everytime and chatting with him!

This place is slowly starting to go down the toilet. The place use to be awesome! Me and my girlfriend are regulars here, we eat here at least 2-3 times a week, or at least we use to. The place is now full of new staff, idk if the old guys were fired or what, but they made this place. The sushi even tastes different. Its not all its hyped up to be anymore. Sushi is hit or miss now.

Great food! Inside is really nice

I've heard hesitation in people's voices when they see the 50% off sushi signs, but it's an almost self-inflicting gimmick. Really what it boils down to is that the prices are higher so that the end cost is about right. I don't know why they do it this way. However, I like the place and have frequented it quite a few times. There's a lot of space in here. I've never had to wait, even when I've been with large groups. And their rolls are good! They have a huge menu and even a few rolls they don't list. Try the charger roll or the padres roll. Both are outstanding. This place has become a regular for business lunches. I do recommend going with a larger group to get more of a variety of rolls.

I found this place on Yelp while staying downtown SD for a meeting and was pretty surprised. Surprised because it's located in kind of an industrial area and a strip mall to-boot! I'm always down for a good deal, but the 50% off sushi rolls sign kind of scared me at first. Basically, there rolls are average priced at $5 (basic)- $15 (super duper fancy). The best roll we ordered was a Padre Roll and it was their daily special so it's not normally on the menu, although I'm sure they would make it. Shrimp tempura, avo, cucumber, crab meat on the inside, and spicy yellow tail on top. Yummy!! They don't have the proper glasses to do Sake Bombs, so be prepared to improvise....I know you can do it. Overall, decent prices, good sushi, little parking, and very clean on the inside despite the location.

I got the fishiest smelling Toro I've ever had at this place. They held it till the end of the night so I would separate it from the rest of the night. I'm not being a jerk, I love food. Their service was amazing, but the Toro was old. It ruined the rest of the pleasant experience for me. Toro is a gift from God, it should never be served to good paying foodies in the state I received it in. Any self-respecting owner would give it to his employees before it reached that state. The rest of the food was good, but Toro is sacred, and expensive.

I went there recently with a date - and woke up the next morning jonesing for the seared ahi. I didn't expect much because of the location - I had driven by many times, but assumed it was fast food sushi (with lots of crunch rolls) that I wouldn't like. But it is amazing, as others have said. Clean and beautiful inside, with very fresh fish, good sized portions, and attentive serving staff. I can't wait to go back.

== Tsuruya Sushi== Walking in here gives you a pretty good feeling. The decor is very nice and you will feel comfortable dining in. Of course you're welcomed by the friendly sous chefs and you can then sit at the bar or grab a table, even take it to-go if
(4)Carla S.
I found Tsuruya by accident, was not sure about it since I am very picky about my sushi!! Well, I was very surprised & pleased. The place is clean & cute, the food is delicious. My favorite rolls, spicy cilantro, konami & hot lips!!! The staff are nice, the Sushi Chefs Kent & Sean are very fun & nice guys!. I go very often, and I noticed that a lot of their customers are there just like me.....twice or more during the week, cause their price is very reasonable!!

I came here looking for 5 star awesomeness and found... a sushi joint that looks & sounds like a too-cool-for-school disco in a strip mall. However to be fair, the nigiri on offer at Tsurauya were pretty good and well portioned (my preference at sushi bars... rolls are cheating). The fish was fresh and the service fast. The waitresses, as pointed out by other reviewers also, lack hospitality but were efficient... but there were some moments lost in translation (an order of Hamachi turned into Saba. Huh?) The menu here is pretty broad and there were a few things I'd have liked to try, but there were only two of us so we stuck to the sushi bar fare. Not a gem, but a pretty good place for casual Saturday night dinner.
(3)Sasha R.
The sushi does not disappoint! The only thing is the restaurant is in such a lousy area. Other than that, it is fabulous and definitely earned 5 stars from me! Check it out! p.s. Still, the most spicy, tasty, delicious spicy tuna roll around!
(5)Jaimee H.
Some of the best sushi I've had here in San Diego. They were offering 50% their rolls the last time I was here. I love their Rosecrans tempura roll which is deep fried and has spicy tuna, crab, cream cheese, avocado, jalapeno in the inside. Other favorites include the spicy tuna roll, and shrimp crunch. My friend recommended this place to me for their great tasting sushi. I recommended this place to my sister who loved it so much that she recommended this place to her friends who in turn also loved this place so much. We are all regulars to this place.
(4)Amanda T.
I went here about a week ago for my friend's birthday. She had a big group, about 15-16 people and the restaurant was able to accommodate. The food was great-- looked great and tasted great; they have this really cool sushi boat. All together we probably ordered over 20 rolls and lots and lots of sake & beer. They have this deal where if you buy 2 beers you get a free sake. Believe me when I say we took advantage of this deal. The service was nice-- they dealt everything and took a special moment to recognize the birthday girl, plus they threw in 4 FREE extra bottles of sake! Even though it was a Navy group it took us a while to get rid of all the drinks. 2 words to sum up the night? SAKE BOMB!!!!
(4)Jessica C.
4 out of 5 rolls were on the money! Haven't had good sushi in a while, either. We loved the shrimp tempura, crazy, philadelphia, and asparagus rolls and hated the spicy tuna- it had prepackaged fish unlike the rest of them. Service started off slow, but the girl was busy and did a great job overall. We'll definitely be back!
(4)Marc C.
Love this place. Best sushi in San Diego.
(5)Andi B.
Love the food and would take my friends here for sure. Service is okay. Waitress seemed not very happy though
(4)Cayla L.
I was in the neighborhood waiting for my car to get done. This place was right across the street so I said what the hell. Walked in the place is clean and looked very nice. The staff were VERY nice the moment I stepped in I was greeted by two ladies. Sat right in front of where the man made the sushi and he was nice also. I ordered my food and ask for a specific fish not to be added and that was not a problem. Got my food within a reasonable time and it was AMAZING. I absolutely loved every single bite of it. The price was a little higher than what I would like but the food was worth it. I would probably only go here every now and then but definitely recommend this place to everyone.
(5)B N.
Very reasonable prices for very good food. I like to hit it up on lunch at least once a week. I took my girl here last week for dinner we stuffed ourselves and the bill for two was still under $30.
(4)Daniel D.
This place is now my number one place to go here for sushi. I first came here when my best friend took me out for dinner. She barely discovered it before she took me here and she in love with this place. So i ask her to take me to her go to sushi restaurant and she took me here. The only downside is that the parking is kinda tight but walked in and it was super clean and very spacious. Usually most sushi restaurant is small and tight but not this place. plus very good service. But the food is "DEE"licious. The sushi rolls are tasty and really decent size. But the fish is soo fresh. And of course the the Regular, Hand, and Special rolls are 50% off so that make my dining even better and buy more rolls =) I already came here like 4 times already and going be coming here more often.
(5)Daniel K.
One of the better budget sushi places out there - rolls were good, but nothing mind-blowing. Nice authentic feel, came off as very family friendly. Kind of in a weird spot on Rosecrans. Staff was very friendly.
(4)Abe N.
I ate at Tsuruya with coworkers for lunch earlier this week. The food was good Parking on a weekday lunch hour was bad. The shop was in a very small corner lot with only one row of parking spots, all of them were filled with cars. Inside was a low light. The servers greeted us and escorted us to the tables. The menus were elaborate, with a relief pattern on the cover, a silver tassle in the binder spine, and silver-lined pages of menu items. Fancy. Our group ordered a few dishes of sushi, and some lunch combo plates. The Avocado spicy tuna roll were okay. They had the same quality taste as Sushiya, good. Instead of separate checks, our table received one check for all members. That made paying the bill a bit inconvenient. We spend a few minutes dividing cash and deciding on one guy to use his card. Good service, fancy menus, good food, average prices. Sushiya at Liberty Station was closer to return to work, same quality food and service, but with convenient separate checks. This place is okay.
(2)Matt B.
Pretty darn good. Didn't have a ton of food here but the food I did have was great. Garlic edamame was good as well.
(4)Chef Jack M.
Gotta' say when Ken is on vacation there is a definite lack of friendliness at the sushi bar. Tonight we weren't greeted and didn't feel welcome. Although it took quite a while to get served, the sushi was fresh and flavorful as always.
(3)Gerri B.
The service was very good. We were there around 4pm so parking was good, and we were seated right away. The décor was modern and inviting. The 50% menus had a good variety of rolls to choose from and the rest of the menu had a lot of choices including cooked entrees. The food was very good. Next time we are going to sit at the bar so we can see the food being prepared. The restaurant was very clean also. All in all definitely a place to try if you want sushi at an excellent price
(4)Khanh N.
good experience. our waitress was very helpful, considering we were first timers to the restaurant. sushi came out very quickly, with three chefs working. suhing portions were generous, considering the price. taste and freahness of sushi was good. udon noodle was standard fair. gyoza was average. mochi ice cream was a nice conclusion to the evening.

BEST SUSHI IN SAN DIEGO! Ive tried many sushi places in san diego but nobody else can beat the quality and prices! 50% off special rolls and regular/hand rolls all the time! my only complaint is that the old asian lady that works there is a witch. She needs to learn her manners. If this wasn't the best sushi in san diego, I would not come back because of her. They also have take-out and it comes out a lot faster than the normal sushi. Don't sit in the tables- your sushi will come out a lot slower than if you had sat at the sushi bar.
(5)Dominick F.
Went here for lunch and really liked it. Rolls were 50% off, but then again they were priced a bit high so after the discount it was just about the same as any other place for certain rolls. My girlfriend got the bento box, which was just alright. We shared the shrimp crunch roll, spider roll, and cali roll. Loved em! Really tasty, presentable, and good portions too..I was more than full after our meal Wasnt crowded, that was a plus. Service was good. Rolls were great. Place was nicely decorated and clean..probably better ambiance at night though (felt authentic none-the-less)
(4)Diana W.
Sushi....Bomb. And I don't mean bomb, like gnarley can sometimes mean cool. I mean bomb like, boom, fiery etc. (trying to be very careful as to not alarm anyone - totally speaking metaphorically) So let's make it easy - not good. I ordered two role and made two requests, no cucumber and soy paper. I swear they put extra cucumber in it. When I said the order was wrong they refused to redo the rolls or refund my money. To add to that, the rolls were not good. The fish was OK, it certainly wasn't 'bad' but it wasn't good. And they added a cajun seasoning under the fish that was just too salty and overpowered everything. It tasted like they sprinkled Lawry's all over it and called it a day. To sum it up. Rolls, blah. Service, Yuck. So my review: Blah, Yuck.
(2)Danah W.
I used to come to Tsuraya Sushi all the time when I worked in Point Loma after they first opened. Back then the food and service were great. However, on my most recent visit our waitress had a terrible attitude. She said she couldn't bring us extra plates to share our apps and rolls. We were only allowed one small plate each for our dining experience. She was slow and sassy. Not cool. Especially with so many other great places to have sushi in San Diego. I'll go somewhere else next time, thank you.
(2)Cole M.
A decent little sushi spot. The prices are very affordable and the food is good. The variety of rolls is somewhat lacking; it seems like every special roll has spicy tuna in it. The location is very awkward, but the interior more than makes up for it. The place doesn't seem like it's on an island near the freeway... Needs some drink specials and some local beers. I would go back again but I wouldn't rate it above other the local sushi places that are a stone's throw away.
(3)Jason T.
*** 50% OFF!!! (IF IT WAS DOUBLE THE PRICE OF EVERYWHERE ELSE)*** WOO! Seriously, who hasn't noticed that tacky gimmick on their menu. Whatever it's funny. I'm changing my review from two to three stars because my wife and I have decided to ignore the poor service apparently because we keep going. The sushi chefs are great but the waitresses are crazy slow especially the old lady who acts like she hates everyone and her job, no idea how she still works there and hasn't been canned. Must be an inside joke. Seriously, she's pretty much Stanley Hudson from The Office. They should get married. We just prepare to wait if we go. It's usually worth it.
(3)Rachelle P.
Buy two beers get one sake free! Need I say more? This place is a jewel! You wouldn't think a sushi place in a small strip commercial area would deliver so well! Don't get fazed by the neon signs, contemporary design, and the top40 music. This is a legit sushi restaurant with legit japanese sushi chefs. The staff here had always been nice to me and friends/BF whenever we go. We usually get the mixed sushi and sashimi lunch/dinner. The nigiri here is good too, the slices of fish are gerenous, compared to other sushi places. The quality of the fish is really good too. Very, very delicious. They have half off specific rolls and hand rolls all day.

The star rating is always this balancing act between value, service, ambiance, quality and taste. With that in mind, let me break it down. Service: Went here for lunch (open at 11:30am) and it wasn't packed at all. Since that was the case, everything was promptly served. I can definitely see service being slow later in the day once the place gets crowded, though. Ambiance: Ok, the outside of this place NEVER sold me. It looked so cheesy! That 50% off sushi sign had me wary since day one and I never thought to end up at Tsuruya Sushi on my own accord. Luckily, a friend took me here and I was reminded of the old saying "never judge a book by its cover." The inside has a nice little bar area, booths to sit in and a few flat screens to watch. Definitely a nice place to chat it up with a friend. While the decor isn't exactly hip, it wasn't bare bones like other places I have recently been to. Quality and taste: Hmmmm. Yes, this is a sushi place so people's ratings are going to be all over the place. For a budget-minded person like myself, the taste is much better than other sushi places I've been to recently. The four rolls that I tried were all good. Some better than others, but it definitely was NOT hit or miss like some other sushi place I'm thinking of (hint: this place includes the other name of a Japanese raccoon that's rocking out). All the fish tasted fine and nothing was questionable (you know the feeling). Passed the tummy test (stomach hasn't complained all day)! Value: Holy crap, this place can be pretty cheap. I was wondering if I could find a cheap place closer to me that wasn't Sushiya all the way in Chula Vista. If you stick to the 50% off rolls (specialty, regular, and hand rolls), you can pay about $4-$8 a roll. If you really wanted to be thrifty, you could. Granted, I wouldn't pay full price for the rolls here and that whole 50% off thing is a gimmick to make you think it's a super deal, but for the area and potential for a decently priced meal, it really does the job. Overall, definitely a place to try one time if you live in the area. If this is a bit of a drive for you, I think you could find better places that can also save you some gas. It's a solid 3 star restaurant with added benefits (price, location) that make it a 4 star for me. All I know is that I will be coming back for sure to get my sushi fix when I want something in my neck of the woods.
(4)Kenny P.
Really good quality sushi at a decent price. All specialty rolls are about $15 and are delicious and worth about that but just look up above and see the 50% off on all of them almost!!! Got out with a few rolls, some nigiri, two large beers and a huge sake for $35 hard to beat...
(4)Elijah A.
I've been dying to find a good sushi restaurant with a reasonable price range and at last here it is, nice and close to the trolley too. Tsuruya had very good sushi and at a great price, there's a "happy hour" for rolls and I managed to get Caterpillar rolls for five bucks. Awesome! I haven't had anything else there yet but I'm excited to! Crunchy spicy tuna rolls look really good. The employees were all very nice and courteous as well.
(5)Caitlin C.
Ok, this place is GOOD. The rolls here are super huge, and the prices are great! The tempura is flaky and udon base is tastful as well! It's always clean and servers are always friendly. I've had excellent service every time I've gone in, and I've been coming here at least once a week for the past 3 months! :) The only thing, their spicy scallop isn't made the way I usually like it to be made, so I ask them to give me a side of spicy mayo :) Albacore and seared tuni is great, and their ponzu sauce taste good too. This is probably the only place I've been to in SD that gives you so much sushi for the price, and decent sushi too because it taste fresh. Anways, everytime I come, I'm starving. I order off the menu with my eyes, and when Sean is working he always knows to not make certain items I order off the menu because I won't be able to finish it. Glad that he can do that because I'll probably stuff it into my mouth anyways since it's in front of me, but thank goodness Sean is on the look out for me. Otherwise, i'd be a sushi ooompa looompa.
(5)Sarit B.
They need to change their closing time to 9.00 pm since it seems that they don't want to give service after this point. Customer service is extremely bad and it is a shame since we used to dine here min once a week. Won't be back for more
(1)Katie K.
Wow! Delicious sushi! They offer 50% off specialty, hand and regular rolls!! Also if you buy two beers you get a large free saki large enough to share with another person! We ordered the Hawaiian roll, crunchy shrimp and Fugi Roll. They had crunchies yellowtail crab shrimp avocado and special sauce on them. Four rolls, four beers and two sakis for only $49.00!!!
(5)Keridwyn R.
I'd seen Tsuruya sushi many times going through Point Loma, always thinking to myself, "50% off rolls" all the time? Sketch city. But tonight, the boyfriend and I were thinking of sushi and not really in the mood to break the bank, so we ended up here. On a Thursday night around 6:45, the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full, and we were seated right away. It did take a little longer than we expected to have our order taken and to receive our sushi once we ordered it (our edamame came out right away), but there were only two servers to three sushi chefs and one busboy. Also, the sashimi and "premium" rolls aren't 50% off, just the regular rolls, hand rolls, and special rolls. The special rolls are insanely overpriced though, so 50% off makes them reasonable. I included the price of each item with the review below. Here's the breakdown of what we had: Edamame $4: I've never really had bad edamame, and this was good. The top pieces had way more salt on them than we really liked, but perfectly manageable. It also was brought out to us very fast. Salmon hand roll $3: boyfriend had this, said it tasted great, especially the nori (there was a lot of it) but also filled with a good amount of salmon. Salmon skin roll $4: Probably the best salmon skin I've had, boyfriend agreed. It managed to be soft and crunchy in the same roll, and had carrot in the with avocado! Nice tiny bite size pieces covered in unagi, I think this was my favorite roll of the meal. Eel & avocado roll $4: A little more avocado in it than I'd like (I love eel and am not a big fan of avocado) but good. Small pieces with unagi over, really good roll, especially for $4! Shrimp tempura roll $4.50: It was wrapped in some rice paper or something that didn't really enhance or detract from the roll. However, the pieces were gigantic! I'm not a fan of a piece of sushi I can't even fit in my mouth, but it was good taste-wise. Rainbow roll $7: My second favorite roll of the meal, a crab roll with the salmon, a white fish (I'm assuming yellow tail), avocado, shrimp, and tuna along the top. The pieces of fish on top of the roll were thicker than I've seen on other rainbow rolls (love that) and the roll was the perfect size; it was large enough to get a big chunk of fish or avocado on top, but not too big to comfortably eat in one bite. PS this roll was $7 after the 50% off! Tsuruya roll $13.95: This was the one "premium" roll we ordered that was not included in the 50%, but it was baked. It consisted of crab, avocado, and cucumber inside and salmon, crab, and shrimp baked on top. Between each piece of the roll was a sliver of lemon. This roll was good, but it had a spicy taste to it (boyfriend described as tasting reminiscent of a sausage pizza, and I had to agree a little) that I wasn't expecting. I expected this roll to be like the California Beach or Lobster Beach rolls that I've had and loved at other places, but that spiciness was distracting and weird. Not bad, just different. I probably won't order this roll again. Our total bill (with one soda) was $45 and some change. Not bad for edamame, a hand roll, and 5 rolls! We left nice and full. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice too; it felt classy without making me feel like I didn't belong there as a college student in my ripped jeans, like some sushi places do. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It wasn't the best sushi I've ever had and won't become my go-to sushi place, since I want to try more sushi places around San Diego (so many to choose from!) but I'd recommend it to friends for sure!!
(4)Kevin E.
This place is bomb. Crunchy Spicy Tuna, no avo and no cucumber.. AMAZING Couple times a week for me and the wife, when we're missing Japan.
(5)Angela C.
Ate here after an afternoon at the Zoo. It has a tiny parking lot so we had to park at the Big Lots and walk over. The inside seems spacious and clean and the food was fine. It didn't really leave any sort of impression on me so I gave it an average rating. I don't see myself coming back here any time soon.
(3)Oanh L.
Okay, my personal experience aside, their food is average at best. Everything here is extremely overpriced. The only cool thing is the decor and airy feeling to this place. I left this place upset because management sucked! My friend and I were both mislead about their specials on the rolls as well as a coupon we had. We specifically asked the waitress if we could use a coupon we had on the special priced rolls they had. She told us everything was a-okay! Trust me, we weren't trying to be shady. The coupon requires a minimum amount of $35 dollars to be spent and so we needed to know if those special prices go for our coupon so that we can make sure we spent enough! So it was all gooood times until she rings us up and charges the rolls normal priced.. WTF girl, we just asked you! We shoulda known better! I knew it was weird when she nodded with yes's and smiled at everything we said.. And then when we asked her how come she told us we could use the coupon for the promotions, she just look confused and helpless. She seriously looked at us for 5 minutes hoping we would just forget it. mmm NO. Then she pulls out her manager. Her manager tells us that the waitress said she never told us any of that. Oh please,.. I would say that, too, if i didnt wanna get fired. Anyways, after a few more moments of accusing us that we were eating for free if she was to give us the discount on the special rolls I slapped her across the face. ok jk., i wish i could have. just too many witnesses at the scene. There was no compromises, that biatch got her way and i was tired of sitting there looking like a psychotic customer. It's the principle people!!!! anyways, i will never.. EVER.. EVER!!!!!!!!!! come here again. i hate writing these nasty reviews but gotta do what ya gotta do!

Preface: I'm pretty picky about my sushi and typically go to really authentic (Japanese Family) establishments that serve Omakase [think Sushi Ota or Kazumi Sushi]. SO... for me to say that I absolutely love this place as a lunch spot is saying a lot. Is it an authentic spot? NO. But it does have a great selection of lunch combos and bentos where you can get Korean Bulgogi, sushi, shrimp and vegetable tempura all in one. I'd take that over Todai any day. Reasonable prices, decent portions, great tempura (usually)... and its close to where I live.
(4)Thomas K.
Was able to get my impromptu order in under 10 minutes on my way to the airport to pick up my girlfriend. Got unagi hand roll and spicy tuna hand roll.....neither was very good. Thumbs up for effort.
(3)Art.Food.Music.Love L.
I tried this sushi joint for the first time and thought it was decent. It's not my favorite, but for the location in SD, it's pretty OK. The prices are great, especially for handrolls at $2.50-3 bux a pop. I had ordered the Udon soup as well, and I was disappointed. The noodles tasted really dough-ey and the broth was way too salty. I enjoyed the Ocean roll though. I might go back and try some other rolls, but I'd say give it a shot especially if you like handrolls.
(3)Danielle W.
Love the sashimi and sushi rolls here!!! beautiful cuts of fish and the staff are lovely and the sushi chefs even made me a snail out of a lemon which made me smile.
(5)Marilyn L.
To be fair, we came in on a weekday night. The location just isn't all that wonderful as in it is somewhat tough to get to because of the traffic flow. Decor is average. We sat at the bar, sushi chef was friendly and funny. A massive plus for me is they've four types of tobiko which not all places carry nowadays. Sushi was OK, not superb, not poor. Once again, to be fair, weekday. Isn't a delivery day for them. We had one specialty roll which was ok. Service was outstanding. I would rate them average to slightly above.
(4)Diego F.
We eat here at least once a week. The Sushi is very good. You cannot believe that this restaurant is a hidden treasure for most!!One of our Favourites in San Diego!!
(5)Mau L.
I have been here twice, and both times my food was delicious. First visit: Ate here on a week night. It's a spacious restaurant with a long bar, lots of intimate booth seating and tables for large parties. Luckily they had the IND v. DAL game on their 2 large HDTVs hung behind the bar, so my bf and I sat at the bar. I ordered sashimi (2 pieces for $2.95) and shrimp tempura roll (which was 50% costing me $4.50). I was very pleased with my food, timeliness, and special dessert of artsy-sliced orange slices with whipped cream and cherry. The host and sushi chefs were very kind, attentive, and enjoyable to watch. Second visit: Went on a Wednesday. I guess the secret's out about this place! It was waaaaaaaaaaaay busier than my first visit. Because it was so busy, the quality of service was a little slower. Our appetizer was ready before we received our waters. The waitress sincerely apologized twice although we never received refills during our meal. My group ordered 4 different rolls (all 50% off) and arrived probably 10-15 minutes after we had finished our appetizers. It felt like an eternity waiting for our food because I was super hungry. I didn't think the restaurant were prepared for the busy night because there were only 2 chefs working on more than 10 orders. Even though the service was less than average, the food was delicious as always. I would go again with a large group of friends or not. Either way, at least I know I'll consume a quality dinner.
(4)Kaylee G.
very fresh fish and good rice.. they have excellent selection and very reasonable price.. really liked this place..
(5)Kristina Marie K.
I adore this place. My first date with my bf was here, and we always enjoy the miso and green tea, and for him a coke. It's fantastic how when you walk in the door, everyone working yells IRASHAIMASEI!!!! WELCOME!!! I think I will continue to go here even if my bf and I break up. Now, you KNOW a place is good if you will keep going even if it reminds you of your mean, crude, ex. The sushi rolls can be COOKED! I recommend the filling and scrumptious spicy cilantro roll, it is a specialty roll...or the California Beach Premium roll. Oh My! You are in for a treat! The Ikura is always fresh and tasty and the nori is always sticky. ENJOY!
(5)Terry S.
From the outside it looks kind of strip mall, but the interior is rodeo drive. Nicely decorated, friendly staff, good service. Sushi bar seats about 10-15, and has plenty of booths. Everyday half off rolls! We ordered 3 rolls - California, Hawaiian, and one other - real tasty with a tall Asahi!
(4)Shera R.
Ive been several times and I really like this place. It's not my favorite, but its convenient for me - and the lunch prices are good. Their fish is fresh, their Udon is Loaded, the only "eh" thing I've had so far is a salad with sashimi- don't remember if it was an albacore salad or what I got exactly, but it was a little overpriced for what I got. Their rolls are similar to what you find in most American sushi bars - fun and tasty. you can often find coupons in local listings + I think they are on Restaurant.com too. and they're open 'till 10pm during the week.
(4)Kimberly S.
Never been here for dinner, but I LOVE this place for lunch. They have several rolls that are 50% off and great lunch specials. Totally reasonably priced. It's hardly ever crowded and the main downside is the location, or should I say parking. I really didnt notice and rolls unique for this restaurant but they have your common rolls. They have a good ambiance as well. All and all, if you are in the Point Loma area, I would definitely recommend this restaurant!!!

Domo arigato Mr. Roboto! In this case, Mr. Roboto was Ken-san, our sushi chef for the night. I cannot rave enough about this place and last night was only my first time eating here. Located near the In-&-Out on Rosecrans, Tsuruya could be the new sushi hot spot in San Diego. A warm, friendly decor bathes the customers as they walk in, and simultaneous greetings from the sushi chefs behind the bar make it feel like home. The menu, while quite extensive, aims to please, and stikes a bulls-eye in this critic's eyes. Tsuruya offers more than a dozen starters, a handful of lavish desserts, and upwards of 100 types of sushi-from handrolls to nigiri, baked rolls to sashimi. Our party of four made our way to the sushi bar, and as recommended, sat in front of Ken-san's station. I already knew what I wanted, waiting anxiously for my friends to order in unison. First up was a simple spicy tuna roll-neat and crafted with care. On my way in, we spotted an amazing concoction arriving from the broiler, the Tsuruya. A heavenly mixture of fried shrimp rolled around crab and topped with salmon and masago, baked and served. Literally melt in your mouth. One of Ken-san's personal favorites from the menu is the Fuji. Hamachi and scallions top this light, yet vibrant roll and only the slighest touch of soy sauce will do. Unfortunately, last night they were out of hamachi belly, one of the things I was looking forward to trying the most. No worries though, I decided to order the sea urchin instead, topping off the night with one of the most sinfully delicious bites known to man. Sea urchin is my favorite nigiri style sushi, and if you can get past the texture, you'll see why. A rich, velvety, and slightly nutty taste will surely make you forget about the price ($8 for 2 sushi). Just like Anthony Bourdain, I too have a death row meal-and this is it. Their 20% Grand Opening deal is still valid through the month of January and is applicable to the front side of the order slips on the sushi bar. Perfect for a date night, or if you just enjoy great sushi.

Always fantastic!! Fresh fish and absolutely delicious rolls at an amazing price. I live in North County and I find excuses to grab sushi here.
(5)Monica L.
yeah I'm teetering on whether to knock off another star for the s l o w service. Especially when I'M DONE!!!-geez already, i'm getting older, on the w a i t i n g. The music is very contemporary so cool, and it can be a bit loud but at least they will turn it down. The food----great!! fresh! innovative! The chef's are funny (especially when bought a drink). Try the desserts--they're actually quite good(short of them being frozen).

Everything here is really good. The salmon was the best I've had in a while. The prices are very low and they always have specials going on. I highly recommend this place.
(5)Toby B.
Great place. Excellent service and the food is delicious. Not too expensive either. Good quality at a very good price. Waiter was very attentive and did a great job. The place is very decorated very nicely. Great place for a date. They even a have a huge boat you can order that comes with lots of sushi on it. The tables are covered in paper and you can draw on them. Very fun. You can even put little notes that say things like I love you Karine.
(5)Mike L.
From outside, the place looks like one of those cheap takeout joint. Inside was spacious, clean. Saturday 1:30, there were plenty of empty tables so I got seated right away. I ordered Tempura Udon and Shrimp Tempura roll. Most of their rolls were 50% off. I looked at their prices and I knew it was predictable advertising trick. Food was big in size and tasty. But then, you really can't go wrong with rolls. I paid $14.49 for my lunch.

Why are there so many 4/5 stars for this restaurant? I went there expecting good sushi because of the reviews. I ordered spicy yellowtail roll, Ocean Roll and split a Sea World Roll. The Yellowtail roll tasted fishy......Now we all know of course sushi tastes fishy, cause it is in fact fish, but fresh sushi does not taste as fishy. ALSO, the fishy taste should be masked by the spicy sauce. This shows how fishy the taste was that it wasn't masked. Sea World Roll - good for atkins diet, because there's no rice, and it was decent enough, but for 13 dollars it was not worth it. Ocean Roll - it was a good roll, spicy tuna with some other fish on the outside. Now that was good, I would say. Their spicy tuna must be good, but the rest of the stuff is whatevs. Also, My roommate ordered Albacore sushi and the albacore was warm. The rolls and sushi are overpriced here. The prices are 3-4 dollars more than they are at other sushi joints. If the prices were more reasonable, I might have given this place another half star or star. There are better options out there.........
(2)Lindsay V.
I'm updating them to 5 starts because they only ask for my number now. Phone ordering has become painless, and the sushi is still great! I love Tsuruya. :)
(5)A L.
Not bad but not exceptional America style sushi. I'm spoiled by having great sushi at places like Surfside and Ota, but I thought I'd check out Tsuruya to see if I was missing anything. The service was good and our sushi chef, Jay, was very nice and friendly and we enjoyed having him as our chef. To be fair we were there on a Wednesday night and apparently they don't get fish delivered on Wednesdays so everything wasn't really that fresh. It was still pretty good, though, and Jay is excellent at presentation, so it wasn't terrible or anything, it just wasn't up to the standards of more authentic Japanese places that I like to go to. I guess you could say it's above average, or just fine, or okie dokie if you like that Americanized style of Japanese food. But since I've found greatness at Surfside and Ota, I don't really feel the need to go back.
(3)Mark M.
Mediocre sushi. Nothing impressive. Sushi had no flavor.
(2)Farzi M.
I love this place. Been here a few times and its always good. They have the BEST veggie roll I have ever had. So cheap too. The wait staff is always friendly and it never takes too long. Also they have TVs so your date can ignore you ;)
(5)Joey H.
The service was attentive and friendly. The sushi itself was awesome. We ordered a variety of rolls. Tuna, shrimp crunch, California, and wow wow. The tuna was straight forward and clean, good quality fish. The shrimp crunch was overpowered by crunch, but still fun. The California was a staple and the wow wow...well...my husband wont shut up about how rad. I don't care for spicy food much but I agreed, it was really good. Price was pretty standard. Only downside was the corny interior. Lots of chotchkies...
(4)Jason M.
I love this place!!! If I could eat here everyday, I would. The hot lips, konami, and rosecrans rolls are a few of my favorites. Their customer service is always superb and with the 50% discount on some of the rolls is something you just can't beat.
(5)Jane S.
by far my favorite sushi restaurant in San Diego. They offer a lot of sushi but everytime my husband and I go here we always get baked lobster roll, lobster crunch, spider roll, shrimp tempura roll and california roll. We also order the Beef Teriyaki dinner which comes with a salad and rice. It's always delicious every time. Interior is nice modern looking.
(5)James B.
This is my all time favorite sushi place. Went there the first week it opened and it was a major surprise. Hands down the best sushi in the OB, Point Loma area; maybe even the world lol j/k. The prices are good and the rolls are amazing, and they have the best version of oysters on the half shell I've ever had. If you sit at the bar make sure you ask for Ken.
(5)Lois S.
This place is WHATEVS.... First off, I think someone wrote that this restaurant played authentic j-pop music. At least when I went, all they were playing was k-pop (Korean pop) music and trust me, I know the difference b/c I'm korean. My guess is that this place really isnt as "authentic" as people think that it is. Not that there is anything wrong with koreans owning sushi restaurants b/c there are a lot of korean-owned sushi restaurants that are THE BOMB... But on that note, Tsuruya is one that doesn't fall into "THE BOMB" category. Actually, they are far from it. My friend ordered the albacore sushi and right when it came out, it just looked wrong. Turns out it was warm sushi. YUCK. And I know people say that the SEA WORLD roll is good but talk about a complete imbalance. Isn't Japanese food suppose to be about balance and the tastes are suppose to flow one after the other? With the SEA WORLD roll, all I could taste was the cucumber. But maybe it was better that I just tasted the cucumber b/c when I took apart the roll and ate the tuna, salmon, and yellowtail that was inside, I was HUGELY disappointed. The sushi was warm, tasted fishy (not fresh), and the yellowtail ... tasted grainy. The sushi left a bad taste in my mouth. Thank god that there were some jolly ranchers by the door to help get rid of the taste. The only reason why i give it 2 stars and not 1 star is b/c they had their 20% off all rolls special. But even with that, I dont see myself coming back here again... especially with the plethora of other sushi places in San Diego that are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better.
(2)Nancy F.
Another nice night of sushi at our favorite neighborhood place. The quality here is very consistent. We love sitting at the sushi bar with chef Ken. The presentations are beautiful and the fish tastes fresh and delicious. The pickled cucumber salad is a refreshing start. Although the menu is extensive, even offering many 50% off rolls, feel free to ask the chef for any combination you want. Say hello to Ken for us.
(4)Ryan A.
When I need good sushi and a decent price this my choice. Not an amazing service staff but there is a pretty good selection and the prices are very reasonable.. Just don't make it a first date place, you may have to dust the cobwebs off your date before your check comes.
(4)Adrian R.
Quality of Food: Pretty good sushi, a little bit better than average Service: Friendly, but a little slow Price: Average. They have a 50% price off sushi menu, which I suspect is a gimmick, since they've had the promotion since they opened sometime ago. The 50% off also doesn't seem to apply to 'to go orders.' The 50% off menu does not include specialty rolls, but does cover a good amount of other sushi selections Parking: Has a small parking lot that they share with other businesses. I never had a problem finding a spot, but I think it could be tough at certain times. Cleanliness: Bathroom clean and so was the restaurant. Additional Comments: Great atmosphere and at a fairly cheap price. I recommend trying them.

i drove by this place a couple times i have been always curious what do they have so i finally tried! i went there on saturday night with my friend around 9pm.. it was not so crowded..the hostess was not so smiley or anything but she seated us quickly. server came right away and took our drink order.. when i opened their menu i was so impressed how nicely designed with a lot of pictures and detail descriptions. but one thing i really didn't understand is their rolls ( some of them) are all 50% off so why they don't put the price on the menu...anyway that's not a big deal i guess. we deiced to try their specialty rolls (50%off ones). Oh! No!: spicy crab inside topped with white tuna Hot Lips: spicy scallop, cucumber inside topped with spicy tuna both of them were okay.. but if i have to pick i like the Oh! No! their white tuna was so tasty and i liked the sauce on top..i still thought it was too much crab inside though... i did't really like the Hot Lips...first of all they forgot to put cucumber inside and the spicy tuna just wasn't so tasty compared to the other place. so we finished Oh! No! and couldn't finish the other roll... we were a still not so full yet we just decided to leave... since the place was freezing with AC..was a little uncomfortable;( the place was clean, the price is very reasonable. but the i wish i liked their rolls more...
(2)Becky K.
This is the best place for sushi! The " wow wow " roll is amazing!
(5)Stu H.
I've been to Tsuruya many times and I strongly recommend it. Prices are affordable and food is above average. Service is great, very nice people. The fish is always tasty and the rolls are all pretty good. I don't recommend their Oyster shooters but that's the only thing I remember being average there. Overall is a great experience.
(5)Carrie B.
My boyfriend and I frequent this establishment. We've been there at least a dozen times, half of which has been take out. We've ALWAYS found the service to be polite and attentive; we've never had to wait at all! Our orders have always been correct and never in my life have I bitten in to a bone or ANYTHING fowl of the sort. The older gentlemen is an excellent sushi chef and has always been polite and funny when we've decided to eat-in. He's even prepared free rolls for us! You absolutely do NOT have to be Japanese to know good sushi;Tsuruya is good sushi.
(5)Peter D.
This restaurant got me into liking sushi. I have never considered sushi as one of the places to eat before this restaurant. I first visited this place in December of 09 and fell in love with Tsuruya. When me and my girlfriend visited LA and Sea World, we had to come back. She loves the eel sushi and the savory sauce that they drizzle on it. All of their sushi has really good crab meat in them. Also, we tried Wow Wow (fried sushi), and it was superb. As always, I had to order some California rolls to-go. Their pricing is really affordable. The handrolls are 50% off dine in and 40% off to-go. Until next time!
(5)Erin L.
I just don't understand how other yelpers gave this place 5 stars. This place was totally whatevs. Yeah, it's clean and new, but the taste of food was disappointing. I had the Sea World Roll, which was 6 pieces for $13, and it had scant portions of fish, no rice, and was double wrapped in cucumber, which was overwhelming. I had a piece of my friend's spicy tuna, and found it to be very bland and mediocre. My friends said that the Ocean Roll was the one redeeming roll of the table, but, again, I don't know if this place is worth trying, considering there are a million other sushi restaurants in San Diego that are much cheaper, more delicious, and more creative. And what is up with the Korean pop music??? It's not Japanese music people. It was loud and chaotic, almost giving me indigestion. I don't plan on going back.
(2)Lillian U.
I think that the 50% rolls are a great deal despite what other Yelpers think, although the specialty rolls are slight variations of each other: spicy tuna inside with salmon on top, spicy tuna with tuna on top, tuna on top with tempura inside....you get the gist. Being a deal seeker, I've never ordered any of the full-priced items. Overall, I think that the quality if good for the price, the dining room is nice and upbeat. Service is a little slow and parking is difficult, but a nice place for an unassuming weeknight sushi date
(4)Jason R.
This place was awesome! Really accommodating for two families with kids. Sushi was the bomb and reasonably priced as well
(5)Fur B.
Went to this place last night with a gift card. It was wonderful! The decor was really nice and new and clean. The menu was extensive and featured lots of pictures - which is helpful for me when it comes to sushi. The entrees looked good and were a good size based on seeing the dishes on the table next to us. The sushi was really good and each roll was large. They have a 20% off all rolls special right now, so the price was good. The desserts were surprisingly good and they had a good selection, which seems rare in Japanese restaurants. I recommend the bailey's cream cheesecake - it's like a little frozen cheesecake, but it's really good. I'm excited to go back.

We have been to many sushi restaurants in San Diego and this new place opened, so we gave it a shot. We were very impressed and have been there two times since!! I highly recommend the Hawaiian roll, rainbow roll, Rosecrans Roll. ----Service--- 5 out of 5 Very good. Very friendly people and the bussers and wait staff will help with any request. -----Speed------ 5 out of 5 We have been here when it was somewhat full and almost empty and the speed was about the same. It was very good and they have 3 native sushi chefs working at all times. -----Selection------ 5 out of 5 They have a ton of sashmi, appetizers, lunch specials (have not tried), hot dinner entrees (not tried), and a good selection of fresh, spicy and baked rolls. They are clearly defined and separated in the menu. ------Quality----- 5 out of 5 The sushi quality is amazing. Their rice is excellent!! I would put this place in line with Zen Sei sushi and I have been at that place at least 30+ times. I cannot speak for the hot dinner items but I can assume they were good. -----Price----- 5 out of 5 Right now every roll is 20% off for the opening special so that means Rainbow Rolls are about $9, tempura rolls are like $10, all very good prices.

wait, first, is that wanna be fresh prince guy f'ing kidding me with the half baked reference and his gargabe of a review? you are so ultra NOT cool, dude. stop writing bs on yelp or at least lose the audacity to call yourself a poet. this place gets an EPIC FAIL from me. i would give them a negative star if i could. they showed us to a dirty table which they said they'll clean up for us, but didn't. they took the plates but left all the stains and what nots on our table, brought us no menus, napkins, or chopsticks. we had to literally flag the waitress down, like HELLO~, just to get our menus after about five minutes of just sitting there trying to get their attention. and i guess the waitresses are only nice to the ones they like or something cus while we were being ignored, the annoying waitress was kissing some major ASS to the table next to us, asking them 'is everything ok?' a million times. we could've forgave them for the terrible service if at least the food was good. the sashimi and the hand rolls were average at best, nothing special, especially for the price we paid. udon was way too salty and flavorless, gyoza was burnt, and the sesame chicken was terrible. the dining experience here was a waste of my life. they should stop stealing money from the poor white people in point loma who know nothing about sushi.
(1)Craig M.
had two completely different experiences.. 2 days ago had a server name tiki and a great cook, an older gentleman and had some of the best sushi ever.. went back yesterday and had the worst service that ive had in a long time.. the servers and chef all sat in a corner and talked the whole time i was there.. they didn't refill out drinks our check on us the while time we were there.. so if you go in and see a young lady with glasses as the server and a stick skinny chef behind the bar, run for your life, or ask when tiki is working cause he will take care of you.. the rest of the staff is a waste of space..
(3)Cindy K.
I love Tsuruya Sushi with all my heart. Spider roll!
(5)Penelope R.
So, so tatse. try it!
(4)Tawn N.
I am a sushi snob and am a fan of traditional sushi of restaurants that will flat out refuse to serve fusion rolls with names like Dragon rolls, UTC rolls or Delmar rolls etc.. And on top of that I am leery of places that have discounts off rolls or buy one get one free or half off places. However, on this particular I was dining out with a friend and was going with the flow. As I walk in here expecting the worst with a big banner of 50% off rolls outside. I was pleasantly surprise. It is not on par with notables like Sushi Ota, Taka or Nobu in Solana Beach but it warrants my return again. The restaurant was noisy but then they were very busy and everyone seem happy as they walking by the long sushi bar. The Salmon skin roll was excellent and their various rolls were good as well. I can't remember names since it's kinda trendy. I also had the uni with quail egg. It was ok. Not bad. Not great. Edible.
(4)Ernesto L.
I love sushi, and even more when It's affordable and quality. Good sushi requires fresh top quality fish, therefore the words cheap, and sushi should never go together. Safe to say that if you saw a sign for( $2.00 sushi rolls all day), you should probably run away as fast as you can from that establishment! Having said that, Tsuruya has 50% off a lot of their rolls on their menu, all the time! It seemed to make a bit of a difference, but realistically as we all know, your always going to spend around $25.00 or more for good sushi. I started with the seaweed salad, and it was good in flavor and texture. It's a decent size portion, which is never a bad thing. I then had the spicy tuna roll, and one of their special rolls called Hot lips, which is spicy scallop, cucumber, and topped with spicy tuna. Both were really good, and fresh tasting. Not skimpy at all either! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Oh toro sushi on their menu. An item you don't often see at sushi places, unless they are high end/ fine dining establishments. It was good, with It's buttery, fatty texture, but I've had better. I've also paid a lot more for it! Tsuruya was good enough for me to come back to again, and perhaps maybe even save a few bucks in the process!
(4)Lily P.
I LOVE sushi and this is the best sushi I have had in San Diego. The rolls are big with plenty of fresh fish! The prices are reasonable (for SD) and the staff is nice. I would definitely recommend it!
(5)Rachel R.
not bad, not bad. I mean, it's not Boss Sushi in L.A. (then again nothing is), but its decent. I've been there twice and the sushi isnt the best, but isnt the worst. Prices are pretty good for what you get. We always order way too much because our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, but we have ordered the Heart Attack roll twice and it was a beast, but a good beast! I mean, if you like fried goodness, that is the roll to order! The first time we went they realized they were taking a little long with the service (we didn't say anything) and they ended up bringing us out some oranges and apologized. I didn't think the service was bad or really good, seemed average to me. I will definitely be going back there, though, that's for sure. Can't beat it for the prices.
(3)Jean D.
Last night, I took to friends for a special dinner. The food was amazing, fresh, hot and had great presentation! We had appetizer, soup, dinner and dessert for under 60.00 dollars! I HIGHLY recommend you go and enjoy their delicious food!
(5)Penni P.
WOW! This place is a find if you can find it. It is in that weird area of Rosecrans, Midway & Sports Arena all meet. Lots of parking. Now on to the review. We got there late and were close to the last people to leave, they never made us feel rushed or hurried. The fish was very fresh and flavorful!!! The portions were big to huge. We thought the prices were reasonable and then they told us that many of the rolls and hand rolls were 50% OFF......SCORE! Beware the hot rolls are hot ...delicious...but hot!
(4)Mindy C.
Maybe it was because I was actually craving sushi last night, or maybe it was because of the $25 gift certificate from restaurant.com that I had.. but I really enjoyed my meal last night. The location is a little weird but that's no big deal.. and I liked the decor/ambiance; they played Japanese pop music, which I thought was fitting of the restaurant (lots of colors.. bright colors). Bf and I sat in a booth and ordered 2 large Saporros--mmmm. Then we ordered edamame, crunch roll, caterpilla roll, and the Rosecrans roll. I recommended the Rosecrans roll to Bf because I read about it on yelp, and it DID NOT disappoint. I was a little skeptical of the cream cheese at first (i don't normally order sushi with cream cheese), but it goes so well with the spiciness of the roll. It was definitely my favorite (and Bf's favorite) of the 3 rolls we ordered. As described by a previous yelper, the caterpilla roll (spelled like that on the menu) came with two little sriracha eyes and sprouts for antennae and tail. Cute :) and delicious! The crunch roll was what I expected and more.. the shrimp tempura was very good. Have you ever had a crunch roll where the shrimp tempura inside was.... kind of hard/chewy/cold? Yuck. Luckily, these sushi chefs know what goes into a good crunch roll. All three rolls ranged from $9-12 each. Oh, almost forgot to mention: the service was great! They serve water WITH lemon slices (i hate asking for lemon for my water). Keep in mind though that this was a Thursday night and the restaurant was mostly empty. Bf and I will definitely be going back.. this may quite possibly be one of my favorite (affordable) sushi restaurants. Oh and it still has the sign up that says 20% off all rolls. Go and support this business!! San Diego needs quality sushi places! (So sad Sammy Sushi closed *tear*)
(5)Jeremy N.
My wife and I have been wanting to try this for a while. Well last night we made the right choice for sushi!! The service was excellent and the sushi was FANTASTIC!! We ordered the Spider Roll(usually my favorite), the Tempura Shrimp Roll, and the Rosecrans Roll( my new favorite), and Katsu Chicken. The Katsu Chicken was nice and moist and crispy, the Spider Roll was as good as any as well as the Tempura Shrimp Roll. Now to the Rosecrans Roll, it is amazing, combining spicy shrimp and crab with cream cheese and fresh jalapeno then rolled and dipped in tempura and deep fried. It is a fried piece of heaven. We will definitely be back and hungry as ever.
(5)Mikala S.
I don't have much to add, but wanted to put in my 5 stars. I had dinner at Tsuruya last night with 3 friends. We were amazed at how nice it is inside...from the outside, it looks like just another strip mall restaurant. The service was SUPER friendly and our meals were all prepared to perfection. None of us had sushi, but I plan to return soon to try some. Even the salad dressing was particularly good--just the right balance of flavors. I'll definitely return.
(5)Rachel L.
I was delighted last night when my boyfriend and I drove by Tsuruya and it was finally open! We were going to head all the way to La Jolla for a raw fix, but Tsuruya had opened its doors, and with a 20% off rolls deal to boot! Here's what we ordered: Hot Sake Mixed Tempura Hamachi Nigiri Hamachi Belly Nigiri Fiji Roll Spider Crab Hand Roll Everything was delicious! I would definitely recommend getting the hamachi belly over the straight up hamachi. Honestly, I never knew there were such distinctions between cuts. Well, the regular hamachi had a slightly metallic taste while the belly was simultaneously juicy and buttery. Yum! The tempura was crispy, delicious, and the serving size was average. They did fry up what appeared to be a slice of acorn squash. Delicious and new! The roll was fresh, and it came with a spicy chili sauce on the side which was another thing I'd never seen before. MMMM. Although we just had the house hot sake, this place had a ton of sakes to choose from that cost upwards of $115. Read the descriptions on the table. They sound heavenly. Screw sugar daddy, I want a sake daddy. The ambience was pleasant. Kind of an oasis in a fast-food trap. They were playing football, which I thought was weird. Sushi sports bar? Eh. All the workers were smiling, happy people. My only complaint about the service was how quietly our waitress spoke. But sheesh, I almost feel bad complaining because everything else was so superb. Eat here. It's good.

A diamond in the roughest intersection in Point Loma. From the outside, it appeared as a run-of-the-mill suburbia hell place, a lot of sand colored stucco, and red letters that say "Sushi". The decor was modern, immaculate and perfectly lit. The friendly hostess guided us to the cleanest sushi bar in the tri-state region. Fresh, huge hunks of fish in a rainbow of pink, red and, whites were laid over ice in OCD-like fashion. The sushi chef, Tommy welcomed us and charmed us with his quick wit and awesome sense of humor right away. Then he showed us his skills... Good miso, edamame that was cooked to the perfect crunchiness, and not-greasy-at-all gyoza, started us off. As well as Sapporo and sake of course. While Tommy did his thing and cracked jokes about sushi chefs, he offered us some picked ginger and cucumbers and showed of his knife skills. This little salad was amazing! Refreshing and curious with some beautiful craftsmanship mixed in. When the rolls were finished I thought, "Are these mutant sushi rolls?!" They were ginormous. The roll itself was impressive, but the slices of fish on top were the biggest I have ever seen. Most rolls are half off, but don't skimp here...The "Premium Rolls" on the menu, are just that, premium. Although the daydreaming about these rolls has left me forgetting the names of the rolls we tried...I can't wait to go back and try more.
(5)Shari L.
I wanted to try this restaurant because I saw coupons available for it on restaurant.com . I was surprised that I liked it so much. The prices were great and the food was very good. They have half price on all the rolls almost all the time. Might even be all the time which makes me wonder why they don't publish their prices as those instead of the higher ones. The had a big menu with a big selection. It is in a strip mall looking establishment. But it is very nice and comfortable inside with nice lighting. I liked it. I would definitely go back.
(4)Shalina G.
If you want to experience some serious sushi-gasm, this is THE place to go! Sushi is fresh, and talk about H-U-G-E portions! And on lunchtime, their SPECIAL rolls are half off! Double score!
(5)Nicole S.
I love this place! The Sushi is delicious, good size portions and great prices as most of their rolls are 50% off. It's comfortable and usually never too crowded so you can always get a a table. The Hawaiian roll and vegetable tempura roll are a couple of my favorites.
(5)Selma K.
Ok, I don't even like sushi but I like the idea of 'going out for sushi' so my husband took me because he goes there for lunch. I loved this place. I loved everything about it. The food, the service, the look, and most of all the people. I left there hoping they will be in business for a very long time. I'm a huge customer service person and I'd give them 6 out of 5 stars for that. You have to try the "heart attack" it's to die for. Please give this place a try because I really want them to stick around.
(4)Leo C.
Good sushi place in an odd location.... The decor is def. not what you expect when you are outside. Very modern and cool. The menu pricing is odd... the menu is printed out with high prices but it has 50% off also printed on the tops of the pages of the products that are '1/2 off' while the ones that are not on 'sale' have reasonable prices... at the end of the day the prices end up being reasonable but this way of doing it is odd, at least to me... maybe it's a common marketing ploy in japan? The food was good... we did not pick as well as we could have but that is not the restaurant's fault. The rolls where fresh, large and well presented. We had some awesome hand rolls (3.00!). Service was good although we took a child and ordered the kids meal (plenty big) the food was steaming hot when they put it in front of the kid they should have either handed it to an adult or put it in the fridge for a minute... after reading all the rave reviews about Tsuruya, i was psyched to try this new sushi joint. my friends and i ordered the rainbow roll (the standard roll we use to judge all sushi places), sea world roll, k...?, and the fiji roll. the rainbow roll was the first to come out and was a little less than desirable - the cut of the fish barely covered the roll itself. the roll itself was a little creamier than i would have liked...too much mayo =/. and the fish?...didn't taste so fresh =/. the next roll (sea world) was a little better, it was wrapped in some sort of radish and the sushi chef was more generous with the fish. the sea world roll was much more refreshing compared to the rainbow. and the other two? not memorable. all in all - i would have rated this place 3 stars for the food - but the service we received was not so hot. our waitress radiated "pms"...

You have wait 30 min for a roll....the price is cheap but the quality BAD...!!!

Ken(head sushi chef) is fantastic. Otherwise, the terrible service does not make up for the low prices. Attempted to place an order over the phone and they hung up on us 4x... and we are regulars. Huh??

I cannot believe how poorly we were treated here. We have eaten here at least 6 time with my wife and young son He is a sushi vacuum, and we never leave for under 100. I am so glad that they are doing so well as to dismiss us. They would not let my wife and son sit at sushi bar. They finally, reluctantly, relented, and proceeded to ignore them the whole night. Would never address my son. The most they said was, your "Boy" does nor need gari. Like they knew whether that was true or not, but he did not deserve a set-up. He eats twice the sushi I do, and I eat alot. Idiots. When I called later, Ben said there was no manager to talk to, but the owner's policy is that no kids are allowed at the sushi bar because it was a Safety Issue. Seriously? He said that was the owners new policy. What an idiot. There are so many sushi bars in my area, I am so glad that this place is doing so well that they can be such d##ks to customers who love sushi and want to spend money. Must be nice. Ben, I'd look for a new job cuz that's a lame policy. Owners, put a sign outside that you do not treat families well, We sushi as a treat, and we spend good money when we do. It will never be at this place again. Thanks for a crappy night. You did not deserve the tip my wife left.

Just went there this weekend and it was pretty good! Great atmosphere and great service! Was a little afraid that night was not in the mood for something new but boyfriend insisted we try something new. Sushi and Teriyaki were delicious. Had the Philli and Ocean. Both were yummy. Definitely easy on the "clumps of rice" as said by another yelper. Love that! Easier to get in your mouth! My worse pet peeve at a sushi place is the lack of customer service and lack of atmosphere. Tsuruya makes you feel good. The hostesses sat us right away with such a welcoming and gracious attitude. Am going back and bringin' my friends!

I have been here a couple times with my wife and we love it. Its very clean and well kept. The staff is friendly and on point. They will even teach you some Japanese. The menu is fan-taste-ic with some great rolls. The fish here is one of the freshest in town. I recommend looking above the sushi bar because they have a fresh list and it will say what's the freshest fish of the day. After trying numerous sushi restaurants all over San Diego, we finally found our spot to get the freshest, tastiest fish every time! Enjoy

I was psyched to check out this new sushi restaurant in Loma Portal especially after reading all of the fab reviews but was I disappointed. I actually just returned and had to tell you all that I do NOT recommend this place. They are charging too much cash for their low quality fish. We walked inside and were warmly welcomed by all of the sushi chefs. The ambiance was really nice...low lighting, decent tunes and new, clean everything. We ordered the house salad and it was light and probably the best dish we had. Next, we ordered the salmon/avo hand roll. The seaweed wrap was tough and chewy and totally ruined the roll. We ordered hamachi nigiri and hamachi belly nigiri (b/c of the previous yelp reviews) and both tasted NOT GOOD. Sushi Deli 1&2 have better fish than this place and I don't dig those places either. Their caterpillar was decent probably b/c the eel is cooked. If you live near by, go to Kyoto or Umi (read my reviews). I hate writing negative reviews but I don't want you guys making the same mistake we made. We paid 50 bucks for yuckiness AND to top it off, a nat flew in my saki and died. They didn't replace our sake or give us a discount. Boooooo!

The sushi here is very good. Every time I've been there they have a pretty good roll special, such as buy 1 get 1 free, which brings their prices down into the reasonable range. The full menu prices are a little steep, but I haven't had to pay them yet. The clam miso soup is really good.
(4)Jenny B.
The sushi was overall pretty good! I had a Ikura roll with a quil egg on top along with a wow wow roll, and a spicy tuna roll! The wow wow roll was pretty tasty!
(4)Tram D.
The sushi here is excellent. There are some unique choices on the menu that I haven't found elsewhere. The prices are reasonable for the quality of sushi offered. I didn't like the imitation crab in my sushi though. I felt that for the prices they charged, they should add real crab in there. Some of the menu offerings doesn't explicitly say imitation crab. I had a coupon so that helped out immensely with the prices. The service was a bit slow but it was a pretty busy weekday.

Ever since a friend from work took me here, I have been hooked! Tsuruya is without a doubt one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. The sushi rolls are simply amazing, and better yet are reasonably priced too (and the portions are huge!). The best part of it is that most of the rolls are 50% when dining in and 40% off when taking out (only the premium rolls are full price). Some of my favorites are the Oh No! (with white tuna), the Hawaiian (shrimp temp with red tuna on top!), Geisha (they sear the tuna on top! yummy!), and Ocean (love albacore!) rolls. Sometimes I'll pay extra and try some of their premium rolls. If you are willing to intake some extra calories the Rosecrans is simply amazing, it is deep fried and very tasty, and also extremely huge! If you want to really taste the fish I recommend the Sea World, which is wrapped in cucumber instead of rice and is devoid of sauces. I also happen to love the Buffalo, which they add smoked salmon to (it gives it a delicious savory taste), and the Lemon, in which they wrap lemon slices around the sushi. I have tried some of the non-sushi offerings, and I've been pleased. They have an awesome lunch combination that comes with salad, rice, two rolls, and chicken teriyaki. I also liked their Don Buri bowls, however it is still the sushi which is the best thing this restaurant has to offer. Oh, and let's not forget the most important part, the fish is fresh! You will not be disappointed by trying this place out.

I almost never review restaurants on Yelp, but I feel obligated to post this one. I have eaten at this restaurant twice before. Both times before I found the food average and overpriced for the quality. I went for sushi two nights ago at this restaurant and ordered three different small items - nigiri sushi. Our sushi chef was an older gentleman with glasses - I don't recall his name. When I bit into the first order of sushi, a small centimeter long bone pierced my tongue. Needless to say, I was not happy. The bone was hanging on a stringy part of the fish. I immediately told the sushi chef who was surprised, but other than that, did nothing. After 20 years of eating sushi, this was the first time I have ever encountered a bone in sushi and I don't know anyone who has ever experienced this. As a sushi chef, you have one job - to make sure the cut of fish is suitable for the customer. If you don't notice something like this as a sushi chef, you either don't care what you are doing, you are incompetent, you can't see well, or all three. In this case, I think it was all three. Despite this unpleasant experience, I politely asked for the check and left after paying. As we exited the restaurant, the sushi chef said something in Japanese to the hostess which made her laugh when we passed by her. I suspect it was something rude for him to save face in front of his co-workers. Don't let this man prepare your sushi. If you want good sushi, go to Sushi Otta or somewhere similar.

Nigiri portions were ridiculously large and fresh!

Love this place.. have come here for years. Usually good service (only one bad server so far). Great for sake bombs and baked salmon rolls. Great quality food at affordable prices. Love the environment, very clean and well taken care of. Almost no wait for a seat but sometimes a few minutes for your food. I try to tell everyone to come eat here because of the baked salmon roll. You can get full here with just one roll. Good sizes, prices, and food.
(5)Nick C.
This place is awesome for a student at lunch because the prices are pretty reasonable. They make their sushi fresh and all of the food I have had is succulent. I seem to always be drawn to the lunch and dinner combos so maybe you will be able to branch out a bit further, in the end though everything I have seen come out of the kitchen looks good. Come with a group of friends, come by yourself, it is great. Bring a pencil or pen and write on the paper table cloths. Give it a try and you will not be sorry.

this place has slowly became our favorite for good sushi and realistic prices. don't let this crazy location throw you. it'son the busiest corners in SD but you don't even realize it once inside. the staff greets everyone with a loud and fast Ohiogusamst (sp) every employee will wait on you no matter who is assigned to your table. all have a smile and are friendly. the sushi comes fast and is as good as any in town.

This place was OK. I went in around 5pm on a weekday. There was a total of 3 people in the place so more staff than guest. I ordered a Cali roll and one of their specialty roles. While no rolls came out to the three customers I waited over 20min for my rolls! The host was pretty rude. He repeated my order to me three times for some reason seeming impatient so I just pointed to what I wanted and he kind of rolled his eyes and gave me a "yeah" that sounded like "duh". Then while I was waiting he sneezed into his hands three times and without washing his hands he processed my credit card, put together my food when it finally came out. EW I just think sneezing is gross and considering no one was in there he could have spared the 45seconds to go suds up. But when he did hand me my food he was very polite about it. The restaurant itself looked nice and it seemed clean. I could see people going here for a quiet dinner. Personally...I won't go back because if the front of the house is gross I don't want to know about happens behind the house and I'm not willing to wait 10min a roll. In the end the specialty roll I ordered wasn't what I pointed out that I wanted but it was absolutely delicious.

Love this place and they had a special with great prices. The sushi was fresh and delicious. Their spicy tuna was spicy which I love! We ordered to go for 16 people and they did a fabulous job! I would definately go again.
(4)Andy S.
Chef Ken made some great sushi treats. His recommendations of Halibut and Spanish Mackerel were awesome. My third time here and I will be back again and again and....
(5)Kunal K.
Great Sushi for a great price. I came here on a tip from my parents who went with some friends when they were in town and I was not disappointed. Usually to get my sushi fix for a good price I go to Sushi Deli for the hipster environment and great price. But Tsuruya gives you great quality fish for a great price. I highly recommend this place for someone looking for a quick sushi fix for a great price with their permanent 50% off All Sushi special.

If I could give a negative review I would. WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD. First of all my boyfriend and I ordered dinner entrees and we didn't receive our soup until about 15 minutes after the first of our food arrived when I REMINDED HER TWICE THAT SOUP CAME WITH THE MEAL. Then when my boyfriend's food arrived it was COMPLETELY wrong and we didn't even get an apology. They just walked away muttering profanities. And his food didn't arrive until 30 minutes later. My mother's roll didn't arrive until the VERY end of the meal after they brought 2 incorrect rolls and told us that the incorrect roll was OUR fault. Finally the bill arrived and EVERY item was included in the bill PLUS they had the AUDACITY to include the mandatory 18% gratuity for a party of 6 people. My mother went to the hostess at the front and said that we would not pay gratuity for the service that we received at which point my mother asked to speak with a manager. We were told that the restaurant had NO MANAGER and essentially NO OWNER. The head chef was then called over, and he told us that if we had a problem we could come here and write a yelp review. But unfortunately that was all we could do, but that he didn't really see what the problem was since we ate the food. At this point I told him exactly what the problem was; not getting our water filled, incorrect orders, no apologies, late food, and then the waitress bringing the check over BEFORE all of our food had arrived, and then coming back over about 10 minutes later as soon as all the food had arrived to remind us to pay the bill. We received NO apologies for the ABSOLUTE WORST SERVICE. And what's more, as we walked out the head chef yelled out to us "Don't come back!" ABSOLUTELY SICKENING. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. The food was good, but in the end it didn't matter as the service left the worst possible taste in our mouths as we walked out.

they know how to treat custmers i feal like king, great food i love this place ......
(4)Victoria Y.
Is it korean or japanese owned?! I can't tell but the bulgogi gives it away..so I say Korean. Came here at 8 pm starved. I was a bit peeved that the sushi chefs were watching tv instead of making my sushi.. LOL.. I love how all the rolls except the special rolls are automatically 30 percent off. Seems silly as though they can just make the price cheaper without having to factor it later on. Had the california and the spider.. have to warn you though..the spider roll is incased in a white skin not seaweed but it's still yummy. Service is a bit slow.. you have to be on the look out and wave but everyones super nice there

I had high hopes for this place because of all the good reviews. I have had a lot of sushi from all over the US, in Japan and in Thailand. I always get Octopus. This Octopus was cut to thick. I suffered through the first one, and had to spit out the second one. Far too chewy. The Spicy Tuna hand roll was good, but the regular roll, was not tight enough and fell apart when dipped into the soy sauce. The yellow tail was good but wasabi had almost no bite to it. Lastly it took almost 10 minutes for the waiter to get the check printed and my payment swiped. I ended up walking to the front to get it done. Overall I left disappointed and not satisfied.

Visited twice. First time - we sat at the bar and had the undivided attention of one of the sushi chefs. Portions are large and we ordered a couple of appetizers, beers and rolls. It was a pretty good experience overall. Second time - I went with a group of 5 others. Granted, the restaurant was not as busy but we received pretty good service. We ordered a humongous boat and had to be relocated to a bigger table because of the sheer size of the boat. Beers and appetizers this time too. The sashimi pieces were delicious but I detected a faint fishy flavor from the tuna. But I let it slide because everything else on that boat was quite delectable. The place is big and clean and well lit. Tip for getting service at a lot of Asian joints: Raise your arm up and call them. Make eye contact. A lot of Asian places that specifically cater to Asian clientele will not have a wait staff that checks up on their tables because culturally, that's just not how it's done. It's true, they're in America and serving American clients, but it's what they brought over from their country along with their yummy food. So the next time you need more water, or another chopstick or napkins, vocalize it, or grab it from the next table.

I love this place. I come here at least once a week and I am never disappointed with there food. I like the fact that they have 50% off of their hand rolls and traditional rolls. The konami, Geisha, and Spicy cilantro are to die for. The Eel and salmon handrolls are amazing. On the downside, their bulgogi roll was not good at all and the bento box not so much. Come here to have sushi and nothing else!!
(4)Brent G.
Very good Sushi but below average service. I would have given them 4 stars if the service wasn't so bad. I am impressed with their sushi, presentation on the plate, and cleanliness and ambiance of the restaurant, however the servers need dire improvement. Our server forgot to bring out our 3 hand rolls and only brought our 3 sushi rolls. How do you foul something up like that? It was toward the end of the night and by the time we realized it, it looked like they began closing up the sushi area, so I deferred and said forget about it. Prior to that, the server got one of our rolls wrong and brought out one without spicy tuna on it, it was just half of the ingredient and clearly a different roll. We ate 2 or 3 of the pieces and then realized this and called her over. She got hostile with me asking why I didn't let her know right away. Well, the roll was tempura covered hence, I didn't realize it until after biting into 2 pieces. She was just plain nasty, inefficient, and rude. The manager at the end of the night really didn't offer much incentive to come back again. She said sorry for the issue and that was that, nothing like let me knock off one of the rolls or give you a voucher for something for next time, etc. While the food was very good, I don't know if I will go back again based purely on the poor service. A side note- they enlist some trickery with their $25 for $50 minimum spent Restaurant.com coupon. You cannot use it for half of their items, and 75% of the menu is already noted as '50%' off so you might as well just buy the rolls and sashimi with the standard 50% off pricing rather than force yourself to spend $50 with the Restaurant.com promo. 4 stars for food alone and 2 stars for service so I averaged to make it 3.
(3)Heather W.
I'd give 3.5 stars if I could, for the sushi. The service here...well it leaves something to be desired. I appreciate Mike D.'s advice, however, we ARE in the U.S. and my mother is an immigrant and so are all four of my grandparents and that is NO excuse for poor service. Moving on... Interesting location in Pt. Loma/Rosecrans/Sports Arena area. Clean, bright and friendly staff-just not very attentative. The 50% off deal is pretty cool. Sushi is good, quite a selection. If you decide to take on Tsuruya, go for the sushi-not for the service and expect your meal to last a little longer than average.
(3)Brittany R.
My husband and I eat here all the time! The food is amazing and very affordable. I've had plenty of sushi that has been great but way too over-priced. Once my husband brought me here, I was hooked! Plan on coming back here again and again for my sushi fix!
(5)Chris B.
Poor service and mediocre sushi. We sat at the sushi bar and was ignored for so long that I decided get the menu myself and attempted to give our completed sushi list to the chef standing 2 feet in front of me. The chef rudely said that he had too many other orders and couldn't help us. We sat confused and finally a waiter came by and took our sushi form. You get what you pay for at this restaurant because the rolls are low priced and low quality. Very little fish sits on top and inside the rolls we ordered. The same rolls at other restaurants contain much more fish inside and out and were about the same price. I hate to disparage any restaurant, but I left highly disappointed and hope this review will lead to better service and quality in the future.
(2)Marsha N.
Absolutely love this place! They are always friendly, great customer service and the price on the sushi isn't bad at all! I have to say, this place is great. It's a must try kinda place!
(5)Tim P.
I went to Tsuruya earlier today with a friend after trying to find a place to eat. The restaurant itself is located around Sports Arena (in the between the Burger King and the DelTaco/In-n-Out area) and the medium-sized parking lot accommodates the restaurant and a few other businesses in the space. Service: The service was awesome (despite the fact that there were only three groups in the restaurant) and the waitress was attentive. You order your food by looking at the menu and checking off what you want on a strip of paper that they provide. Atmosphere/Setting: The restaurant setting is pretty nice compared other sushi places around San Diego. It's well lit, there are flat screen TVs and you have the option to sit at the sushi bar or booth. Food: We ordered the gyoza, Rosecrans roll, Shrimp Tempura roll and Hot Lips roll. Definitely order the Rosecrans roll (listed under Premium rolls in the menu). If I remember correctly it's spicy tuna, crab, cream cheese and jalapeno deep fried. As my friend said it's enough heat from the jalapeno and coolness of the cream cheese that makes it a delicious roll. The shrimp tempura (regular roll) was good and bigger (diameter) than most shrimp tempura rolls I've had. Hot lips (spicy scallop) was also good and had enough heat where you weren't constantly drinking water. Overall the experience was awesome because it left you feeling full but not full to the point where you feel sick. Service was quick and attentive and most importantly some of the rolls (regular and special) where 50% off when you dine-in!
(4)Duane B.
The restaurant is clean and planned out to accommodate maybe 100 (bar and tables). The fish looks wonderfully fresh and great detail goes into the cleanliness of the prep area (a must in preparation of sashimi and sushi). Moderate but appropriate selection of Japanese beers and rice wines. Sadly I forgot a picture of the sake and maguro, but they were PERFECT!!! well crafted bites, flavorful fish served at the proper temperature. Salmon skin roll was up there with those that I've had in Okinawa. Definitely going to order more maguro before I call it a night here. You MUST dine here of you enjoy sashimi and sushi!!! Worth all 5 stars and then some.
(5)Mikey D.
Okay okay kids gather round and let me tell you all a story.... I've come here for the last few months and I absolutely love the sushi here... but I will admit, the service is fickle, but if you sit at the sushi bar, you're guaranteed a pleasurable time. The first time I ever ate here, my friend acted like such a diva, we almost got kicked out. Embarrassed and desperate to make mends, I went back with my then boyfriend... we never had trouble after that. Yes, they will forget your water, refills, utensils, and menus. I tell ya though, they're so sweet, so harmless, and really damn clueless. What do you expect, these are immigrants, honest working people, with a work ethic that would be different if you spoke their language, shared their looks, and felt their pain. Little to none of you do... Give them the benefit of the doubt, just relax, be chill.... This is a great place... Its a lil' charming... The last time I went there, the Sushi Chef made us Christmas Gifts out of sushi... and a big "Merry X-Mas" in tsuruya sauce... I swear... be nice to them... they'll absolutely take great care of you! :-) Pay attention to the menu, it can be confusing, but they have some awesome deals on some bomb ass rolls... I love the Ocean, Geisha, and the Rosecrans... be patient... be humble... and enjoy your time there!
(5)Moto Moto Mike D.
Love this place. Very fast service, always a chill atmosphere. The food is Delish! This was one of the 1st Sushi places I came to when coming back from Japan... I don't get to exotic or wild but its a guaranteed good meal every time. O yeah.... SAKE BOMBS ON DECK!!! My favorite part is they have a buy 2 bottles of (Jpn) Beer and get a sml Sake bottle free! ou can have the Family here (lil ones and all) or a cool little date night. They plays a top 40 mix (like 90.3, 95.1) and it's never to loud.... so you can enjoy a conversation.
(5)Elizabeth M.
This place is awesome for two major reasons. It is ridiculously cheap for what you get. And the sushi is actually really good and well presented. I came here with my husband and a friend we had sake, beer and sushi and our bill came out to like $63. Doesn't get better than that especially when you eat to your hearts content. Although I hate going to Point Loma I would recommend trying this place.
(5)Nicole L.
My go-to sushi place! First off, the price is just great. The rolls are always 50% off, which means here you can get a big california roll for around $3. But THE TASTE IS GREAT. I was surprised, I've been to Japan and Japanese is some of my favorite food. The sushi is very fresh and is consistently addictively-delicious. I think the only reason it's not more popular is that it's a bit of a strange location, in the Sports Arena area where there are a lot of big box stores like Target, but also lots of strip clubs.
(4)Lucia C.
I love this place! Every time I go the food is delicious and the staff is friendly! I love it! Wouldn't trade it for any reason! My favorite sushi place!
(5)Gabe R.
I love their rolls here i usually get the hawaiian roll.reasonable prices. The only reason i gave the place a 4 star is because of the consistency of how they make the rolls. Overall its still a good place.
(4)Beth A.
Love this place! Have just realized how close it is to my house and have ordered take-out twice in the past week! Prices are good, rolls are great, and they are super accommodating! Would definitely recommend to anyone! I have yet to actually dine in but it does have a really cute interior and all the sushi chefs say hellos when you first walk in! Overall, friendly, good, and affordable! Definitely could be a cute little date spot!

So one thing I hate is when I think I'm going to a Japanese restaurant, it's run by Koreans. Everyone that tries to say "irrashaimase" can't even say it right. I mean... You don't see Japanese people opening up Mexican restaurants and calling it albertos or something like that. First thing I noticed when I sat down was paper table cloth. I wondered why there were paper tablecloth on top.... And I soon realized that there's super old tablecloths under it and it never has been washed. There are tons of stains and left over crispy dried rice hanging on where you can't even flick it off. Disgusting. When the waiter brought tonkatsu over, he pronounces it tonkachu. Cmon. Say it right. Eh... . Not that it matters but just annoyed me. Food: the tonkatsu was cooked pretty good, it wasn't dry like most places. The spicy Tuna handroll is fat, and tasty. Beef Teriyaki though, had this glob of sauce on super thin beef slices. Could be a lot better. Anyway, food was OK. Not bad. But they overlook and skimp on the details like.... Uhh... Let's clean the tablecloths and not try to mask it? OK. Rereading what I wrote kinda sounds a bit racist but it's not that. When I go to these kinda establishment I expect certain amount of details.... Cleanliness... Even if the place got an A... Still makes me think what other stuff do they got skimping in the back.... Know what I mean? If it was Japanese run, this will never be the case. Btw, The young waiter guy with the shaved sides. Cool guy, very attentive. Overall, food was OK. Tablecloths dirty as hell. Wtf. Waiters need to learn how to say the food correctly.
(3)Raymond A.
chicken teriyaki is one of the better ones in SD for that alone I recommend giving this place a go. Sushi was OK. Big thing you'll notice about this place is the server dudes appear to be a bit off. So its best to just tune them out and hope you get what you ordered, several people at my table had to ask twice. The girls were very helpful cleaning up the dudes mess though so that is a positive sign.
(3)Lance N.
Nice service Good food. I was referred by the valet guy at the Hyatt Definitely worth the stop
(4)Olga G.
My go to sushi joint! I LOVE all their creations and they are always super cheap. For my boyfriend and I, we never have to pay more than 30 bucks for about 6 rolls. It doesn't get any better than that. The interior is so welcoming and the workers are all so nice and helpful. There is so much on the menu that there is something for everyone to love. I recommend the Veggie Yakisoba and Rising Sun Rolls, they are so delicious. :)
(5)Brian R.
Tough to get a parking space, but excellent sushi. I enjoyed the mexican roll. I think the best sushi in Point Loma for the price.
(5)Huong N.
In town for Legoland n San Diego zoo, with family visit included. Wanted some good sushi. It was good, great atmosphere n service. But a bit slow on service even though there were quite a few servers. Overall great place.

I have been milling over this review for a while because I used to love to come here. I have enjoyed coming to this place for almost five years. The last time my girlfriend and I both ate here we ordered our normal full plate of nigiri along with some rolls. Long story short, we both contracted food poisoning from the food. When trying to communicate to the owner that his restaurant got my girlfriend and I sick, I was met with hostility and then avoidance. I spoke and arranged to meet up with the owner "Shawn" and he conveniently was out of town when we suppose to meet in person. All I wanted was my copay for my visits, services, and medicine refunded to me. Around $200.00, that I had to pay out of my own pocket. The basic lack of regard for loyal customers is amazing. I used to recommend this place to everyone, now when I deter them from ever coming here.
(1)Tamara S.
I have been going to this sushi place for years and years. They have upped their prices a LOT over the years but they have also upgraded their quality of sushi for sure and as well as their service. Their service years ago was so horrible I literally only went for the food. Now it's almost upscale sushi dinner in point loma! I am also a big fan of their sushi bento box because it's almost enough food for two people at a great price. My favorites are crunchy spicy tuna and the spider roll. There is plenty of other great ones as well. Sashimi is always fresh! Don't expect a cheap bill though.
(4)Ray P.
The place is under new ownership and they've changed the makeup of some of my favorite rolls and upped the prices. There's now more of the fake crab mix, which I hate, in the rolls. This place is no longer any better than your run-of-the-mill sushi joint.
(3)Rich B.
Dined during happy hour and they had a really nice extensive menu with happy hour discounts and rolls were made to our wishes. The food was served quickly as ordered and tasted superb. The wait staff and sushi chefs were attentive and would consider it very good sushi served at a good discount during happy hour!
(5)Maureen D.
Really great sushi and good quality of fish. Each month they have specials on sushi rolls under $10. They also have a good Happy Hour between 3pm-6pm where you get up to 50% of some of the rolls. I have tried just about everything on their sushi menu and I have never really been disappointed. Some of my favorite rolls are the Albacore Jalapeño, Sunset, Geisha, Hawaiian, Lemon, Sport Arena and Konami! I'm telling you... I've tried a lot and these are just my favorites! The staff there are pretty friendly and the sushi chefs always greet you as soon as you walk in the door. They also have TV's around the sushi bar and a couple in the restaurant seating. Music always cracks me up in there because they play a more upbeat, sometimes hip hop music which I would not have expected in a sushi restaurant. Overall a really great place to go for lunch or dinner and never really overly crowded but for sure a popular place! Parking is not the best during busy lunch or dinner hour but there is at least street parking or parking across the street.

This place has cheap prices and good sushi! Nothing mind blowing but never disappoints! I would definitely recommend this place

We came as a big party for lunch and Kim was our server. The food and the chefs were great like usual except for the service that Kim provided. We made a reservation for 15, but there was like 2 more person came. And when the server knew that we had extra people, she seems to be annoyed and asked why we called to make a reservation for 15 and now 17 people showed up. I was like what the heck?? The only thing she had to do was getting 2 more chairs or grabbing an extra small table. The restaurant was slow for lunch, but I had no idea why the server had that kind of mean attitude to custormers. Then, when we asked for more ginger & wasabi since there was only one for each table, she did not want to bring any extra ones, and told the other waitress to bring one more only. Excuse me, we had party of 17 people not 7 people and we are paying, not asking for free!!! I was so mad for that kind of service from the waitress that just ruined my party. So only 4 stars for the great food and chefs but worst server ever!!!

Favorite sushi place to date. I've tried over a dozen different places in SD but find myself coming back here every time. They have a "specials" menu which basically consists if 10 of their really good $14 rolls for about $7-$9. And they also have a happy hour EVERYDAY from 3-6 with appetizers, hand rolls, special rolls for basically 50% off. They also have good beer and sake deals. So not only are they very affordable, their fish is FRESH and I have yet to be unhappy with anything I've been served. I come here at least once a week with friends and they all love it too!
(5)Amy L.
Absolutely amazing. Had the chirashi and an order of live uni. The chirashi is extremely well composed with pea shoots, fresh wasabi, relishes, and pickles. Plenty of types of fish: salmon, tuna, mackerel, shrimp, tomago... And the fresh uni was literally just opened behind the counter. Great sushi place!!

Right in the weird clusterfarkle of an intersection where Rosecrans Street, Sports Arena Boulevard and the 209 meet and butt heads there is a sushi joint called Tsuruya Sushi. Decided to check it out one evening. Upon walking in we noticed they were blasting rap music - definitely something to polarize the demographics of their clientele. We sat down and ordered a sashimi plate and also some bulgogi. Everything was fine while we ate dinner. Food wasn't spectacular but it was good and the service was attentive. When we were done with our food, I looked around for our server but she was nowhere to be found. We were clearly done with our dinner and all plates were empty. All of a sudden she came in with our bill and told us she was needing us to cash out now because they were closing in 15 minutes. I found that kind of rude - especially since we were already done and were just waiting for our bill in the first place. Might as well just tell us to hurry up and GTFO. Then when she came back with my card and bill that needed my signature, she told us to take our time and gave us a plastic smile. I would have given three stars for being a very average sushi place but I'm docking a star for that unpleasant ending to our night out. Not coming back. Parking - small parking lot - might be full during peak mealtimes. Hope your experience is better than ours was.

Great sushi. The hungry man roll is to die for and comes with tempura langostino bites with spicy mayo. They also have some very tasty rice-less rolls. Highly recommended.

We have been coming here for quite some time now. Our go to sushi spot in Old Town. The rolls are always fresh and more inside than rice (always something I look for). They have a great two for one sake and beer special all the time (I love Asahi). The oysters on a half shell are some of the best I've had in SD. Cool atmosphere, great service, delicious, well priced food, cold brews=good date spot. Oh and you can play a good game of hang man on the paper table clothes:)
(5)Dante V.
Been here couple times sushi is great an the beer is cold an the service is great I totally recommend this place 100%%%
(5)Justine R.
The restaurant is a very nice set up. I went on a Saturday night and I was able to sit right away. The waiter seemed new and had no idea what I was taking about a couple times. We ordered edamame, vegetable yakisoba, spicy rainbow, and baked salmon roll. All that was for about $35.00. They have a monthly roll menu for rolls under $10. It was a good experience and food.
(4)Sunny J.
always delicious, great price, friendly, fast service... Recommendations: Oh no! roll Spicy cilantro
(4)Michaela K.
Great sushi at an unbeatable price. There is always parking and never a wait to be seated. The staff is so friendly and attentive. This is always my go-to sushi place!
(5)Tim B.
Excellent service ! Great price, large portion, and outstanding Sushi! Clean nice environment .
(5)Chris M.
Sushi is good and well-made. The restaurant is clean and nice. Staff are friendly, especially the sushi-chef. The happy hour is great.

I was getting a bit hungry and sushi sounded fantastic! There was a cute sushi joint down the street from our hotel in San Diego and happy hour was going on. Two of my favorite things in one of my favorite cities. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered saki. With 50% off hand rolls and a wide selection of regular rolls, my late evening snack turned into a full on meal. Excellent, well made sushi and extremely friendly staff. I give this place beyond two thumbs up. Sushi rolls, hand rolls and saki for 2 came out less than $30. How is that possible? I don't know, but this place rocks! I want to go back right now because this place was so awesome. Check it out if you are in the San Diego area!!
(5)Jackey N.
So my friend and I pass this place every Sunday heading to church, yet we never stop by. Don't let the place where it's located fool you. We had a fried and smoked rolls and enjoyed it! We're always looking for sushi places to have lunch at after church but a lot of them are not open til 430pm. So glad we came here. We sure will be back. Great service too! They always came back to check on us.
(4)Natalie S.
Stopped by for a quick bite to eat while on vacation..what a awesome place!! Ming is amazing and his presentation on each roll is beautiful!! I highly recommend this place !!! Thanks for the happy birthday ice cream!!
(5)Dena L.
I've passed by this place many times & had not stopped. Thankfully, they were open on a Sunday for lunch since several of my normal sushi places do not open until 4:30 or so. It was hot and we wanted a cool place to eat and sushi. We checked Yelp and the reviews were very good & I'm glad we went! We got one fried roll, and one smoked sushi roll, both DELICIOUS! DO NOT, let the location stop you from going and enjoying their food. It was a very friendly staff who made sure the sushi was to our liking and we were very impressed. We will be back for sure!
(4)Ciyei A.
I like their Oh No! Roll, it is so good. I've eaten in this sushi restaurant probably 3 or 4 times. Me and my friends would usually come here around lunch time. Servers and chefs would greet you the moment you enter. Place looks clean and organized. I've tried probably 6 or 7 different rolls and so far so good. Oh no roll is my favorite so far. 4 star for the super nice accomodating korean chef and for tasty 50% off rolls. We usually seat at the bar and the chef is so nice to answer our questions about the rolls and kind of fishes. I even got an orange carved looking bear. Rolls are really good, good serving size and u can't beat 50% off rolls. I usually get 2 rolls and just pay $9-15 every time I come here. Definitely eat here more often. :)
(4)Stephanie S.
50% off most of the menu?? All the time?? As soon as I heard the magic words, I instantly wanted to try it. The parking lot is a tiny little thing, with hardly any parking, but once you find parking, at least you'll feel great? HAHA The ambiance inside is great. It feels intimate and classy while maintaining good prices. Their shrimp tempura roll and california roll was REALLY cheap. For the price, it's worth it. What really took my attention was the vegetable tempura roll. I was being stubborn and didn't want to try it because it only had veggies, but I'm SO glad I did try it. Delicious! Service is good, but nothing special. Will definitely come here again. This is my new sushi spot!
(4)Yulia K.
My favorite place in San Diego! Always looking forward to their monthly specials. When it comes to quality and price - they are always on top! And I've tried A LOT of places around San Diego and all over the world. Rich always delivers a top notch service! Make sure to try spicy seafood salad and their edamame and take advantage if the beer and sake special.
(5)Mike S.
Took some friends from out of town two weeks ago. That will be the last time... Service was horrible. It was very clear that Brian was put out because he had to do his job. Order was wrong and no effort was made to make things right. Bell stepped in and said she was very sorry. She did her very best to correct the issue. No manager was on duty which I've never seen happen here.
(1)Janelle W.
I think the sushi and the service is amazing. Fresh fish & Japanese chefs. Yummm! The only reason why I gave it 4 and not 5... It's kind of boring in here. Too cold and the vibe needs a lift. Aside from that, it's great!
(4)Erica N.
My favorite sushi spot! Reasonable prices, fresh food, and space! So many sushi places are so small and so loud it's hard to have an enjoyable dinner. This place is the best!
(5)Hector G.
This is one of the best sushi spots in SD and I've become a regular here. Last year I was in here 2-3 times a week watching football, eating rolls and drinking cold Kirin. I've had at least half the things on the menu and some that are not. My kids love the chicken katsu. The head chef (Sean) is a Cowboys fan but I forgave him because his rolls are some of the best I've ever had. His presentation is great and he gives you thick pieces of fish, which makes for big rolls. Most places I can eat 3 rolls but 2 of these rolls are more than enough. I have a few different rolls that I love and sometimes I have them add cilantro, siracha, or jalapeños. Food is always fresh and service is attentive. On the inside of the 1st page of the menu is a list of rolls of the month and they all have happy hour prices. I can't say enough about this place so I'll let my pictures do the talking. Best roll ever... hands down... Sea World Roll!
(5)K P.
Great service. Great atmosphere. Inside is nice, roomy, and clean. Clean bathroom. They have a parking lot or street parking. The outside makes the place seem sketchy and if you can trust the sushi. Haha, nit it's all good! Their specialty rolls on average are $8, not $13 or $15 rolls like other places. The rolls are cut thick and have a lot of pieces. I've been to other places that have $8 specialty rolls, but they are tiny sizes. The rolls here are stuffed with the filling and the fish on top is a lot too. They don't skimp on avocado either. My family and I really enjoyed this place. The hamachi kama was delicious and came with a side salad. It was so meaty and grilled perfectly. The 5 pc chicken gyoza for $4.50 was also yummy. We got the Hungry Guy roll with fried crawfish on top, Lemon roll, Lobster Crunch roll, and Geisha roll. Also got the hamachi kama (yellowtail fish cheek), gyoza, and a kids chicken teriyaki bento box came out to be $60. That fed 4 very hungry adults and 1 hungry child. Everything was delicious! We will be back!
(4)Ann V. S.
This is my second time but first review. The fish here is consistently high in quality and the service is nice and prompt. I ordered the 'Lobster Crunch' roll - made with langostino, avo,..I asked them to add fresh salmon on top and cut the crunch. Langostino is sweet and I love the texture and would rather not have any interference by that crunchy distracting stuff. Ok,, LMAO; they just delivered a CEREAL bowl full of the crunch flakes next to my custom roll..! Haaa! YUMMOO...this roll is dang good! They only charge $3 bucks to add the salmon on top and it's cut so that it curves all the way around the cut roll...liking that! The wasabi is super fresh and peppery hot. Would be perfect with a cold craft beer right about now! Cheers!
(4)Stacey R.
I'm holding back on 5 stars because the service could be a little better. The food is amazing and they have super good prices...but if you're looking to ever get more than one round of drinks, you may get frustrated. We have eaten here probably about 15 times already, and each time, our drinks have been long gone and not one person ever comes around to ask if want anything else...if they could improve on that, this would definitely be my favorite sushi spot!

Lunch date at "Tsuruya Sushi" today was awesome. From the moment we entered the restaurant our waitress KIM was fabulous. She greeted us, showed us to our table and provide incredible customer service. This was the best experience I have had here. KIM was so polite, courtesy, friendly and helpful. She pointed out specials on the menu and made several recommendations. One of which was to come back for the Happy Hour, Monday-Friday 3-6pm. Of all the wonderful customer service she provided the one most impressive thing she did was to not interrupt my husband and I when we were blessing our food. We had received our appetizers and was in the middle of blessing the meal when she had returned with our drinks. Instead of placing our drinks on the table she stood off to the side and waited until we were finish with our blessing. How cool is that? Awesome job KIM! The food of course was amazing as always. The combo lunch special was light but filling: baked tuna, sashimi tuna, potstickers, a salad and rice. I ordered a Lobster Crunch and Shrimp Tempura sushi rolls. The flavor was amazing. The atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable a fabulous lunch date.
(5)Courtney O.
The best thing about Tsuruya is the cost. They keep the sushi rolls at an incredibly cheap price for the value. The sushi is good. It's not as authentic and quality as places like Sushi Ota or some in Convoy, but it definitely satisfies the sushi cravings! It's reliable and not questionable. It's very tasty and they have a wide variety of creative rolls for you to choose from. Go during happy hour from 3-6pm to get 50% off your sushi roll.

Absolutely love this place. If your new to SD there are 2 sushi places I would refer you to. This is one of them. Located in Point Loma. This place is very easy to find. It's just off of the 8west freeway. Going to this place doesn't seem much. But once you walk through the door. It has a huge space with Friendly welcomes by the host, chefs, waiters and waitresses. It's has a modern atmosphere which I don't mind. I prefer sitting at the sushi bar. No wait for a table unless you have a large group. Also watching the sushi chefs is an art work itself! We place in our orders. My boyfriend loves sushi/seafood. For him to rave about this place is one for the books. We ordered: Veggie Tempura Roll on Soy Cucumber Avocado & Cream Cheese Roll on Soy Tuna Roll Uni White Tuna Roll Salmon Roll Seaworld Roll Crispy Salmon Blue Fin Tina (Limited. I would call in to see if they have it). Yes we indulge in our foods but if you love food why not! We got our food and it's freshness is amazing! The sushi chef -Sean is very courteous. I'm allergic to seafood. So when he was preparing my rolls. He cleaned/sanitize his station and utensils. Making sure there is no seafood on it. I never once feel so impress with this. Not many sushi place would take their time or either listen to you if you say you're allergic. His service and the place itself has gotten me as a life time customer. If you're ever near by try this place out!!

3.5 stars It happens every so often - I'll be chatting with one of my colleagues at work, we get on the topic of sushi, and I'm instantly craving sushi for dinner. We always say we want to try different sushi restaurants, and this one has been on our radar for a while. Though they were pretty busy when we arrived, we were shown to a table right away. A waiter came by to get our drink order (green tea for both of us), and then left us to peruse the menu. We knew we were getting sushi, so we focused on that. I found one of the golf pencils on the table, but no sushi menu, or anything - other than the butcher paper on the table - to write on. So, write on the table I did. Hey - you've got to improvise sometimes, right? The waiter came back to take our order, and we told him we'd be getting four rolls to share. He said, "Four rolls!" all loud like we had asked for one of everything on the menu, and let out a big laugh. Now that I felt like a pig... We ordered one each of Hot Lips (spicy scallop and cucumber inside, spicy tuna on top); Konami (spicy tuna and cucumber inside, salmon and avocado on top); Fuji (shrimp tempura, crab and avocado inside, yellowtail and avocado on top); and Lobster Crunch (langostino, avocado and cucumber inside, crunchies on top), then settled back to wait. It took a long time for the sushi to come out to us. Granted, they were busy, but we waited for almost half an hour for the food to make it to our table. Once the rolls were delivered, I understood why: they bring everything out at once, instead of bringing it out as it's ready. At any rate, the waiter came by with two plates, dropped them off and scurried away. The rolls were decent, but only one of them really made me make the yummy noises (that would have been the Fuji roll). The others were well made and good, but again, nothing that knocked my socks off. As we were making our way through the rolls, my tea cup sat there empty. Oh - and the tea? Celestial Seasonings tea bags. I don't understand Japanese restaurants that provide *that kind* of green tea, but whatever. Anyway - the cup sat there empty while the waiter went back and forth to other tables around us. I spent about five minutes or so trying to wave him down to get more hot water in my cup. I mean - it wasn't terrible, but certainly not the best experience I've ever had. Their menu prices are probably the best thing about it all. The rolls are inexpensive, and they have some creative ones on offer. But will we go back? I honestly don't know.

It's hard to find a place that doesn't roll their eyes when you order sushi without the rice. The ex-girlfriend rice less roll was very good. They lost a star on the spicy tuna hand rolls bc I left out the rice but they didn't substitute the extra room with cucumbers slices so the hand rolls looked like cigarettes :/ so if you're going to do hand rolls- leave the rice in and run it off later ;)
(4)Kai H.
The food is great, and the service is excellent. The ONLY thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is the overall environment. The booths are too narrow, and for some reason, the place is too warm even on a cool day. I don't think the central AC was working. But the food and service are top notch!
(4)Steph P.
This resturant is located across the street from a burger king. Their parking lot is very small so you might have to park across the street and walk over. They have really good happy hour specials! Their California and Wow Wow rolls are good. They also have tastytempura with a lot of variety. I usually get their lunch bentos. Some are good and some are bad. Their chicken katsu is good but their sesame chicken and bulgogi are not. The bulgogi is more like Gyudon (fatty meat) and the sesame chicken is really, really sweet (ask for sauce on side if you get it to go). Bentos come with rice, salad, tempura, 2 pcs Cali roll and miso soup all for around $9.50 after tax which is a pretty good deal. Staff have been friendly for the most part when i've come in.

I didn't know what to expect when coming here, a friend took me. Our service was friendly. We came in a party of six and was told we could split the bill up to 3 ways. I was disappointed that not once did any of us receive a refill on our drinks, we didn't get any small plates to share our sushi with each other, and we didn't really receive a check up from our waitress. The sushi was ok. Nothing spectacular. The rolls were oversized and cut unevenly, making it hard to choose which pieces would fit in our mouths. They also were not carefully proportioned so that the ingredients complimented each other, they were mostly slapped up with crab mix with a pinch of this and that. My shrimp tempura roll left my mouth with tiny bits of shrimp shells - no bueno. I also got a deluxe eel roll. I was hardly impressed. The fish was not fresh, it was hard to chew, and dumped in eel sauce. I'm not a big sushi brat, but I know good sushi when I have good sushi. This place is just ok. I feel there are way better options with great deals.
(2)Helen G.
The outside may not look like much, but you'll be surprised by what you find inside. I came here just in time for happy hour (3-6pm) and man was it worth it. The rolls were made very well, the hand rolls were the best I've ever had with just the right amount of stuffing throughout the whole roll (not just fish at the middle and top portion), and the service was great.
(5)April B.
Everyone is so nice and accommodating here. The ambiance is great and welcoming too! Definitely recommend the garlic edamame! Great sushi stop any time of the day.
(5)Ed M.
Upon giving the sushi a try on take out I have to say they have pretty decent sushi here. Their baked salmon roll (my go to meal) is on point. I recently tried their Alaska roll (salmon, avocado, and crab) and it is also delicious and on the cheaper side if their menu. This is one of the other good sushi spots around the Loma Portal and Midway border.
(4)Al N.
Still my favorite sushi joint in San Diego. Reasonably prices rolls, great happy hour, and friendly staff. Even though they are not located close to the water, their fish is extremely fresh, and you know you're paying for great food, not high rents.
(5)Christy R.
Found this spot on the way to a concert. It was dark and not very welcoming from the outside. The inside was nicely decorated and more inviting. We were welcomed by a nice woman who accommodated us quickly. She took time to explain the menu and take a drink order. Our server was there quickly and took or order. We ordered an appetizer of Tempura Calamari and three specially rolls. Well our rolls came out in less then 10 minutes but we didn't get our appetizer. I asked the server and he said the appetizer would be out soon. At this point we were already eating the rolls. Kind of after the fact? We were almost done and I asked the woman who greeted us again and she said she would go check on it. I told her to just cancel the order and she said she would see if it was almost ready and if not cancel it. She came back and said it was taken off our bill. The rolls were good not great and I really wanted that Calamari. Oh well.

Great food a tasted delicious ! It has great atmosphere!! Has great people with scale on the food service .. I love it! And the prices r great!!! Thank you! for feed us with great food!
(5)Greg G.
This place is pretty good. I had the HOTLIPS roll and the 2 item plate. Sashimi and tempura. Tempura is ok. Wasabi was kinda weak. So if you like it spicy you may need to get two servings of it. Otherwise no complaints. Quiet and clean.
(4)Jack M.
I stopped in for lunch hopping to grab some good rolls. I ordered one of their 50% off rolls, the chicken teriyaki roll, a tekka maki roll, and a appetizer of calamari tempura. Both, the chicken and tekka maki were good and came served together on the same platter ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ). The tuna on the maki roll had a good rich and slightly sweet flavor, and with a little Wasabi and soy sauce, the rolls were money ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ). The chicken teriyaki roll was good and their flavor nice with a mild teriyaki flavor. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ) The rolls were a little loose and needed to be tightened up, but if you don't like raw fish, this a good alternative ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ). The calamari tempura was my favorite part of my meal. The panko was a perfect crispy golden brown ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ), and better yet, the calamari inside was very tender and sweet and very easy to chew. I really like that they included calamari rings and tentacles ( yelp.com/biz_photos/tsur… ). Great stuff. My server was friendly and quite attentive. She kept my water filled and came over for causal conversation. They also have large lunch hour bentos at good prices.

The sushi is just amazing. It is real sushi, if you ever want to know how real sushi taste, you will definitely have to go to this place! The sushi is so tasty and they have a lot of variety. Not only sushi but also Hand made sushi, Ramen, Tempura Vegetables, Fried Shrimp, Lunch boxes. Korean and Japanese drinks and Japanese desserts too!! The price is super cheap and they have Happy hour! The attention is very good! Workers there are amazing and do their job very nice. The place is actually very very clean! Even if is it kind of odd, it is very comfortable! And there are sits in front of the chefs so incredible to see how they do Japanese food!! I recommend this restaurant! If you are going, I hope you enjoy it just like me!

When I'm in San Diego, I usually stay in Mira Mesa and its general vicinity. No one really likes to go out of their way for things, unless it's for some kick-ass grub. I made the trip with my friends over to the Rosecrans area to catch up over sushi, which had me wondering what was it about this place that made the 15 minute trip worth it. The place is clean and roomy. There are TVs around the restaurant as well as music playing; enough to keep you entertained without keeping your eyes glued to your cell phone. The price was a steal for the amount of sushi that we got. For our five person group, we ordered five rolls, which came out to ~$60. The specials on the first page of the menu are great to try if you're not sure what to order here. Our server was super sweet with her recommendations of rolls we should try. Get the bulgogi roll if you're not into seafood. If you're not looking to get stuffed with rice, try one of non-rice rolls (my friends and I got the Sea World roll wrapped in cucumber). The delicious sushi for a steal of a price and pleasant service was surely worth the trip.

Ok I think this is for the new ownership. Great comfortable and cozy restaurant. I have dine-in several times now and when you walk in all the sushi chefs and serving staff greets you making you feel like home. The food is delicious and fresh. The price I say is cheap for the fresh and tasty food they make. Tip - sit at the bar if you like to see how they make your food and also the chefs are super friendly and kind. All the sushi is amazing but a few of my favorites comes from the no rice sushi for those on a low carb diet (I'm not). There are 5 different types of these rolls and I like them all but the ex-girlfriend and Tsuruya burrito are my 2 favorites. Also if you sit at the bar order the sea world roll and watch their knife skills as they prep it and also it's very refreshing to eat too. Also salmon skin is better than any place I've been to. Their cooked food are really good too. I'm an adventurer as it comes to eating and like to try everything. I ordered the blue fin tuna belly (toro) and if you are not afraid to try new things this is a must have as it melts in your mouth hence it is fresh same goes to the sea urchin but those 2 also have a market price so do ask prices before you order but trust me you won't regret it. We've taken a few of our friends there me they had nothin but good experiences. Hope this helps.

The Sushi here has always been top quality. The Salmon Sashmi is so good. NEVER has the food ever been of questionable quality. The sushi chefs are always friendly. The majority of the wait staff is very friendly, Kim is always friendly and happy. Love sitting in her area. Sadly we went there tonight, we got Shannon as our wait staff. She was more interested in clocking out than actually serving us. Our food was brought out mine first then my hubs main dish then the appetizer? Other staff was kind enough to refill my drink as Shannon just mysteriously vanished. The only reason I posted this is because this is the second time this waitress has done this to us. Again Kim can to our rescue. Thank you Kim for the awesome service.

BEST.SUSHI.EVER. I love this place... The sushi chefs are awesome. The staff is awesome. The service is awesome. The sushi is awesome. The prices are awesome. I live in OB, but will by pass all the sushi spots in OB to come here instead. I average coming here 1-2 times a week, just to get my sushi fix.
(5)Nina S.
My first thought when I came in: "Ahh so roomy and clean!" Yeah... I don't know why that was the first thing that came to mind. Usually it's supposed to be "I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm ready.. to eat sushi!" The prices for the sushi rolls are pretty good as a lot of them are under $10 (some can be up to $14). They have a special menu with rolls that are 50% off. The rolls can be ones that they already offer or new ones that are yet on the menu. I like the Rising Sun roll. It's pretty much a California roll with salmon and this yellowish-greenish sauce that compliments the roll. Originally it's $9.50 but I was stoked that it was apart of the 50% off roll so it ended up being $4.75! Scoreee! We also tried the Tsuruya burrito roll (containing spicy tuna, spicy crab, shrimp tempura, and cucumber, wrapped in soy paper), which was an item not on the regular menu. It was surprising delicious! I'm guessing they change the rolls for their 50% off sushi special every month? You can check it out on their website to see what special offers they have for the month! I haven't tried their nirigi or sashimi so I can't really compliment on how fresh the fish really is. It is definitely a good place to get sushi rolls at a good price (mostly speaking of the 50% off specials). The service was great! One of the rolls we ordered were messed up and our server immediately fixed it.
(4)Kalin C.
Excellent sushi, friendly staff, and the bluefin belly knocked me out of my seat. The service was quick on a Sunday evening, and after a quick marking of the menu I was already served my beer and miso to start things off. Then came the sushi... The deliciously fresh sushi. The Alaska roll is perfectly balanced in flavor, and so much flavor! Salmon (so fresh-tasting it might have been caught today), yellowtail, and seared tuna rounded out the meal, leaving me completely satisfied... For now. I will definitely return.

I travel a lot for my job. This week in San Diego. This place was walking distance to the hotel (Found it here on Yelp). I am a big sashimi eater. Mostly salmon and tuna. I do like rolls, but try to avoid too many carbs. So the main things are; how does it taste, how well is it cleaned, how nicely cut are the pieces for size and how is it presented. They have my favorite sushi beer, Asihi good start. I see with two bottles of beer, you get a bottle of hot sake for a penny. I'll go for that. Ordered the tuna and salmon sashimi and it tasted great to me, they were very generous portions and it looked very nice on the place. Decided to try two pieces of yellow tail sushi, delicious. Staff very friendly. I went on Monday alone. On Wednesday a colleague asked to join me for dinner and asked did I know good sushi place. I was glad he asked. Came back and had my usual tuna and salmon sashimi and also asked for a spicy salmon roll, though it wasn't on the menu. No problem. Very nice. I leave tomorrow, but will surely remember this place and try it again next time I am in the area.

Great sushi!!! I happened to run into this place because the one I usually go to was closed on Mondays. HOW DISAPPOINTING WAS THAT. The only disappointment was the customer service and restrictions on what could be order for take out. Why can't I choose what I want to eat with no limitations!!!??

One of my go- to spots for sushi! I eat a lot of sushi and among the five places I rotate through this is one of them! Everything is always fresh from the ginger to the fish the prices are more than reasonable. the atmosphere is nice it's never too crowded and you can enjoy a nice meal with whom ever you go there with! The area that surrounds it is kind of rough. One time I went there and this crazy lady came in and would not stop yelling about how she owned the restaurant and they took it from her. Obviously it was clear to see she did not ever own the restaurant and she was out of her mind but she did disrupt the restaurant for more than an hour. But back to the food, ordering is easy, the rolls are fast, the chefs and all the staff are friendly! The edamame is always steamed perfectly. The miso soup is always awesome and the rice and seaweed are always tender!

This is my new favorite casual sushi spot. the food is great and feels authentic, without being too pricy. We got seated quickly and the service was good. it looks a little sketchy from the outside but the inside is well laid out with a good atmosphere so don't let the outside fool you. This place is a great spot for a casual sushi date night, the Tempura Udon noodles are my favorite, and they have great happy hour deals!

It took a little bit to figure out where it was located. Once inside, the employees were friendly, the good was delicious and the prices were reasonable. They have a large menu and I really like that they have multiple televisions so I can watch sports, eat and drink until I am full. I will return soon.

Very good sushi, friendly staff. Much better prices then other places BUT still better prices when they had their 40% off take out and 50% off rolls-they stopped that. Their lunch prices are a bit higher then other places many have a 6.95 special. I will come back here often Im sure.

Incredible! Great find! Easy access at the intersection of the 5, the 8, and Rosecrans. And across from all the Gentleman's Clubs! LOL. If I had known the size of these rolls, one would have done me in. Come here with a date and the typical $100 minimum sushi night will be cut in half with no sacrifice on quality of food, atmosphere, nor service. My sushi chef, Kenny, delivered these killer rolls with a smile. Over 20 years as a sushi chef. I was happy to hear the chefs could accept a beer from a happy customer. I can see a Rock-n-Roll DanceDiego event in the near future. Possibly the beginning of a weekly rock and roll sushi night! So, don't forget to offer your sushi chef a beer! Ganbei!!

How this place doesn't have 5 stars is beyond me. First, the music alone is amazing--every R&B hit from the mid-to-late 90's and a dash of current top 20. The women who work here are delightful and, while sadly yes I too have had to eat my meal without water, they are always gracious in correcting their mistakes. I begrudge anyone who has the nerve to criticize these hard working sushi goddesses. Their food, holy ba-jesus. Lunch is extremely reasonably priced with large portions (none of that cut-roll-that-looks-like-a hand-roll garbage). Their egg rolls are crispy without being greasy. Their salad dressing is thebomb.com and their teriyaki is sweet but not sickeningly so. I am 100% positive that the Ex-Girlfriend Roll is the most delicious specialty roll that I have ever tried--and I've tried a lot. Finally, the crown jewel is the drink special. Buy 2 beers and get your warm sake for $0.01. Five stars all day, and I'd give them six if I could.

One word. Amazing. Was on vacation with my family over Spring Break and we decided that we wanted sushi. Went on yelp and this place came up. Had good reviews and the prices seemed fair. Came in and was greeted very nicely by the staff. They have a wide selection of food. I would highly suggest the Jalapéno Poppers and the Wow Wow Rolls. The California Rolls are so fresh. The avocado is so green! Not only is the food amazing, but so are the prices!!! We got 7 rolls and it was less than $50! Can't beat it. Will definitely be a must go when we come back.

The server was very attentive and quick to please. Food was amazing! Service was excellent! The manager was also very nice and greeted us at our table and was very accommodating when we stayed past closing. I can't wait to come back to San Diego and eat at this establishment again!!!

The place is very nice and very clean. When you walk in everyone says welcome in Japanese. I love it. We sat down and we were immediately greeted by the gentleman waiter. My husband is very simple and loves California roll. I like something with tempura shrimp. I decided to add jalapeno to my roll and was only charged $1. The only thing I wish they had was a shrimp tempura roll with spicy mayo. YUM!!

Gadzooks! This place is the shiz-nittlebam snip-snap-sack. (If you know what movie that is from you are ultra cool) Came here for dinner with a buddy of mine who flew in from Chicago for a conference, so it was past the prime dining hour. At about 9pm we called 3 different Point Loma restaurants before finding this place that stayed open past 9. We were stoked when these guys said they would hold a spot for us, because the reviews on it looked pretty stellar. Upon arrival, we immediately felt kind of bad because we were the only ones in the restaurant keeping the staff from going home. They kind of had a look of displeasure on their faces, but I guess I can't blame them. Even if they were pissed off at us, that didn't stop them from giving us one of the best sushi experiences in our lives. I really don't have a huge repertoire of descriptive words or witty references for sashimi or sushi so instead I'm gong to write lyrics to a song to reflect how fresh the fish was here.... (To the tune of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme Song) Now this is a story all about why My new fav sushi place became this izakay And I'd like to take a minute just sit with me I'll tell you how this became my fav sushi place in SD At my OB apartment all home and blazed (not really) On my laptop is where I spend most of my days Chillen out, yelpin, relaxin, or coolin or writing some reviews sittin by the pool When one of my friends, flew in from my old hood Wanted to get some sushi that was really good We wanted one little bite, but wasn't sure where So we pulled out the Iphone, which told us to go here We didn't need a cab cuz we weren't drinking beer So we drove to Point Loma, which was really near If anything I would say the fog was weird-ish, But we thought nah forget it, lets grab some fresh fish We....... pulled ....... up to the place around quarter passed 9 And I said to my friend yo holmes grab a waiter We looked at the menu, we were finally there My new fav sushi spot, and by this I swear On the real though, everything I had here was fresh and mad delicious. This is even after we disgruntled the employees by coming in so late. Don't let the cheesy sign fool you. It's the real deal!

I love coming here for lunch. The rolls are very well made with fresh ingredients. Portions are quite generous and the value is terrific.

The older Asian lady who works here is a smug bface. She is not nice or friendly. Avoid sitting in her section at all costs! Other than that this place was pretty good. I ordered the heart attack specialty roll, which I was hoping to be a roll similar to one I get from Harney Sushi- it wasn't .. it wasn't even a roll..It was jalapenos halved, stuffed with spiced tuna, cream cheese , deep fried and would of been super yummy- tastic if it wasn't drenched in eel sauce... I just stuck with the veggie tempura and edamame. Veggie tempura was on point, they even had crazy mushroom sprigs in the mix. If I ever go back Id definitely get the Bento lunch box specials, for $8.95 you get way way to much food. Both my co workers ordered these specials and took leftovers home! Maybe Old Girl was having a bad day ? who knows but your attitude is a reflection of your restaurant, so suck it up sweetie and slap a smile on your face, then talk your shit after your table leaves, like every other waitress. Cuz you sucked, and didn't get a tip ..
